Do domains carry any context with respect to trademarks? For example, Acme Inc. trade in the US with a registered trademark and you then register acme.co.uk and there is no registered UK trademark; could Acme Inc. raise a domain dispute over the .co.uk domain stating it infringes their US trademark?

Anyone can dispute anything they like, if they're willing to pay lawyers or DRS fees. Doesn't mean they will win. But if in your example ACME is something non-descriptive, non-generic, probably not worth the hassle to defend it.

Thanks Edwin, I always run non-generic domain names through the companies house web check and IPO trademark search, I'll now check the US PTO too.

If they're non-generic, why are you registering them in the first place? If madeupdomain.com is taken by a real company/website, then it's easy to guess that they will attempt to show that any value in madeupdomain.co.uk comes from the fact that they're spending money/effort promoting "madeupdomain" as a brand.

Basically it's when I'm looking for brandable domains, I knew that I should leave them well alone if a company has any interest at all. I just wanted to check if in the case of a .co.uk domain, I should be searching worldwide.

I haven't registered any brandables yet, my small portfolio just contains generics.

Why did you register it? It might be good if you could briefly outline your thought process that lead you to registering that particular domain name, because then perhaps people could step in and make suggestions... Where did you see the value? What made you think of it? Who do you see the name appealing to? Etc...

Hi Ed

Why did you register it? Thought it looked good as its generic,

Where did you see the value? current old mac Donald sites and farms etc. may want to purchase,

What made you think of it? saw it had been deleted

Who do you see the name appealing to? I see it appealing to Commercial Farms etc,

ask yourself why had it been deleted? I found the answers the answers to most question were in old threads on here.enjoy the reading!
