I asked some guys for you, they said:

Henry VIII and what a goddam snorter it is as well!

henry VIII posthumous coinage penny i think

If it's a single coin find, you dont need to report it, if another turns up, you do, as they'll both be more than 300 years old. If you had clearer images, they would be in a better position to value it. It certainly looks as if it's been 'clipped' in its day, but that shouldn't affect the value too much, the detail doesn't look as if it's that worn.

i had a metal detector years ago and found a coin with william the conqueror on it. turned out it was a fake but still a few hundred years old. sold it for a tenner. :(

I've been tempted to buy another metal detector as much for researching where to search as the actual searching.

It's interesting that when treasure is found, the land owner and the finder share the funds from the sale. So if you're the finder and you don't feel like sharing, just dig a hole in your back garden and say you found it there.

Boxerdog, someone's winding you up mate, I've just had this back from someone who looked at your pics:

Looks like a modern copy. On the reverse is the letters WRL below the shield on the left. You can get them on eBay. Here's one, ebay item 300283908558...

...I wonder if image quality was deliberately poor so that the 'WRL' couldn't be spotted.

The clearer image here shows the lettering position:
REPRODUCTION HENRY VIII GROAT.. on eBay (end time 23-Feb-10 22:54:28 GMT)

Im really tempted to buy a few of those and scatter them round the fields :D

That reminds me of someone I know who put a small piece of crap in clingfilm and dropped it on the floor in a student pub near us. Sure enough an excited student thought he'd found a free lump of hash and scuttled away with it. He didn't look impressed a few minutes later when he'd obviously got it out and examined it in greater detail.

LOL!
you can imagine the student unwrapping it and putting up to his nose to see what 'strain' of hash he procured
the resulting face pull would have been a picture lol
bet he wasn't counting on that 'strain' :D
