Hi, I'm really new at this malarkey so be kind if I'm a bit dim! :)

I have had a .co.uk domain for a few years which I use for one of my businesses. I haven't really developed it at all (so there are no records showing massive traffic or anything) as I concentrate more on my other business now, however, I have been approached by a foreign chap who is interested in buying it.

I don't want to be cloak and dagger about it but not sure whether I should advertise it on here where he might see this thread but suffice to say it's a much used phrase in the fashion world and currently a very well known high street group are using it for one of their collections. (Sorry for being so vague).

The question is he won't make me an offer and is asking me to value it so do you think I should possibly sell to him (obviously once I have decided a price) or, is it appropriate or even allowed, to approach this high street group and offer it to them? Or, should I hang on to it (I'm not that fussed either way really). Not sure of protocol in these matters.

I am happy to email anyone who wants to know the domain and if you think I should, I can post here.

Thank you.

If he has asked you to pay for an appraisal to be done by a 3rd party then do not do it!

It's an established scam whereby the 3rd party and the bloke pretending to be interested are working together in order to get the appraisal money.

Feckers :)

Oh, sorry, don't want to mislead. He hasn't asked me to get it valued, he's just said 'how much do you want for it?' after I asked him what he was offering. :)

Here would be a good place to get an idea of the value, and possibly some offers.

It is difficult to give much advice without knowing the name, I doubt that approaching a high street chain would be successful, and is probably unwise.

Posting the name here might compromise your position if there is any trademark issue.

Up to you whether you want to sell or hold. I wouldn't say that decision was a matter of protocol. But if you aren't using it, and don't have imminent plans to use it, why not sell at the right price if the capital can help grow your other businesses?

Before offering the domain to the High St firm, check beforehand whether they have registered a TM. If they have, obviously leave them alone! It's a tricky area, I would still think twice before approaching someone who is using a name/term/brand commercially, as even if they don't have a TM, there are precedents where the person in your situation has had to hand over the domain.

PM me the domain if you like.
