Ultimately people started using Google because of it's simplicity. Yahoo and MSN (now Bing) had too much content and flashing stuff getting in the way.
Whatever Google is doing right now is just one further step towards visitors moving on. If it could be excused to make visitors experiences better I think however much domainers / affiliators / website owners were frustrated it could be understood - but there are so many 'standard' users getting frustrated by the clutter, unwanted customisation and adverts that I think they are just waiting for the next - reliable SE in it's infancy to jump ship (when ironically the cycle starts again and another G is created)
I know G is a big commercial giant but I think many stayed loyal to them because they seemed different. A huge giant not going down the greedy corporate route and giving a lot away for free. They still do and are but the independence of the SE has now turned in to a Yellow Pages screen where the companies with the deepest pockets get the most prominence - and the smaller SMEs and growing entrepreneurs from countries across the world have seen their springboard diminish.
Agree with Edwin, Dale and others - give it 5 years and there will be a new kid on the block....
