Google now part of Alphabet, using ABC.xyz

Seems to be in part a Google inside joke referencing Hooli.xyz which is a fictional company in the comedy series 'Silicon Valley'...

Now is the time to buy tons of .xyz domains
</sarcasm>

Sadly people will. Expect to see them flooding domain forums with 'premium' domains soon.

Well it's easy to be cynical about the new gtlds, but here we have a new holding company which owns Google, and what extension does it choose? Not .com! Let's face it, they could easily afford to buy any .com for sale with their cash pile, even the most optimistic domain investor wouldn't ask more than their annual coffee budget.

If they bought company.xyz or business.xyz then fair enough. But their use of the .xyz extension is pure novelty in a similar vein to deli.cio.us back in the day.

Anyone who's going out and investing in .xyz on the back of this announcement is nuts.

Of course, that would be crazy. But doesn't it feel like a line in the sand? Here is the company that owns the company that made investing in domains worthwhile (let's face it, it was Google's treatment of domains that made most domain investors, and even this forum) choosing an extension that most domain investors would rubbish!

To repeat, this is a company that not only owns search, but that could buy whatever they want in terms of domains without blinking. It's not that they chose .xyz, or any other gtld, it's just that they did not choose .com.

Presumably just to give them time and space to negotiate the purchase of it, but we'll see.
That would be the absolute worst way of negoatiating to buy a domain or really anything for that matter. [emoji23]

If you owned alphabet.com and saw that announcement, how many 0's would you add to the sale price you had in mind say a week ago?

BMW own the domain - you think they're just going to sell it because someone asks?! :D

Not that I've read much about it, but isn't Alphabet just a holding company? In which case, the domain extension is pretty irrelevant.

Correct. There is no indication that Google (sorry, Alphabet!) plan to market the "Alphabet" brand itself, as opposed to the brands owned by the various subsidiaries.

the cynics here on my side are saying it's all done so Google can be used for all them "don't be evil" things, and stuff like military contracts, eavesdropping, etc, can all be done on Alphabet, which sounds far too nice a company to do anything naughty.
