I have written an issue group brief on "Expired Domain Tasting":
http://www.andrewbennett.co.uk/edt-issue-group.pdf

N.B. this paper is still in draft form and may change.

Now i'm looking for people to join the issue group....If you are interested please let me know.

I'm also trying to find examples of registrants who have had problems with this issue e.g. UK Individual (whois opt-out) who has had their expired name parked/tasted by the registrar within the 30 day grace period.

I have to say though i'm not a big fan of this DIY stakeholder approach....

Why should the burden be on the 'issue champion' to:

1. Write the issue group briefing paper?
2. Recruit the issue group members?

See: http://www.nic.uk/policy/issuegroups/

Under the old .uk policy process you would have dedicated PAB members who would take the issue (simple email from the stakeholder) and would then have the experience and knowledge to write the paper and discuss it themselves?

The old PAB also had the credibility and authority to invite different stakeholders who would be highly likely to attend the meeting. When your trying to do this yourself how are you going to get DRS experts etc to join in your issue group?

This is an interesting issue.

Personally I don't believe that registrars should have the right to change the nameservers of a customers domain to display adverts or to "taste" traffic. On the other hand, why should registrars run DNS services for domain names for free past the expiry date.

I would prefer a grace period of say 7 days from the expiry date, after which Nominet automatically change the nameservers to their own and display a "This domain has expired" page listing the contact details of the registrar.

If the registrar then renews the domain, the nameservers are automatically set back to what they were with no update required.

This would effectively kill domain tasting and would be a nice and simple solution.

I like to see what happens when the registrant has to answer a legal case due to adverts displayed by the registrar.

Big can of worms.

Indeed, It's only a matter of time before this happens.

Also possibly related is the emerging trend of registrars taking control of a domain in suspension and auctioning it off:

http://www.dynadot.com/marketplace/expired/?tld=co.uk_org.uk_me.uk

This opens another can of worms as they just push the domain to the winner so it remains in the previous registrants name.

I have heard that domain monster are also doing this to some degree.

Mmmmm, the very same thing crossed my mind recently when a couple of names I had monitored and that were suspended and due to drop a couple of days later, and of no real value, both had domainmonster nameservers; & that once I booked them both through domain monsters catching system suddenly both became renewed again.

Could be just a coincidence I suppose?

There was a thread on here a while ago where someone was tring to renew a suspended .uk there and was told that they had already found a buyer for the domain, or something along those lines. Can't find the thread though.
