DomainLore Auction Electricals

I think that many people at the coal face dont really give two sh1ts what a domain is. They know their local supplier or they know where they get the cheapest deals or the best customer service. They dont give a toss about a fancy domain name.

Most effective advertising is subliminal.

Electricals refers to anything electrical, it's as simple as that.

It occurs to me at this point .

Q: Why does anyone buy anything ?
Ans: Because they want it.

If someone could PRSS %electrical% vs %electricals% that may provide end user uptake for the word(s) in a domain.

I could understand people questioning the sale price for Electicals.co.uk if it had been sold for 50k or the like, but come on, companies spend 5.5k on daily advertising. We all see things differently otherwise we would all drive the same kind of car and all be married to the same woman but lets keep things in perspective, it's only 5k.

But it was a domainer who bought it, so when coming to the flip (from the £5K buy in level) one has to be sure they are taking the right punt.

Domainers don't only buy to flip. Many build business's around domains and have the resources to make a good job of it. There are many levels of being a "domainer"

All fair comments guys - lets face it if we all agreed on domain investments the market wouldn't be anywhere as near interesting and as profitable for most of us. This particular term does seem to have polarized opinion far more than I would have imagined. For the odd opinion that thought going to somewhere like a mainstream-supplier for all your needs is probably wide of the mark for anything outside of regular component supply (they make their money out of sales of 100,s to 1000's of unit sales. Most of the Electricians I know (and a fair few ask me to look stuff up for them, I've come to the conclusion that they are not the most internet savvy bunch) tend to be looking for specific manufacturers part No's (and they rarely know who that manufacturer is) so not the sort of stuff your going to find or indeed match at one of the major component (1,000's of unit sales)

Directory sites may well have had their day but I couldn't have thought of a better name for an small to average sized electrical contractors.

I work with 1200 electrical installation companies and can say that "Electricals" is not a term they use to describe components. I accept that some people may use it (although I suspect that is very low) but it's far more associated with electrical appliances than it is with "Electrical Components".

Let's look at RS Components, a large supplier. They do not even have the word electricals in their extensive list of keywords on their homepage - that tells you a great deal. Also looked at Rapid and they don't either... (also, partsmaster - the currys owned parts company that does not really serve the trade but importantly has parts for most things including appliances - does not mention that word on their homepage).

I often agree with Bailey, but tend not to post much, but on this occassion he is so off the mark (imo) that I had to "correct" the assertion.

I agree, I used to work for Farnell the other big supplier, and I have never heard any of the thousands of customers I met use the word electricals.

It doesn't really fit well with components or with electrical goods, and it isn't even really a word.

Can you imagine a supplier of mechanical fixings using mechanicals.co.uk.

It doesn't make sense in to people in the trade I think.

It clearly has divided opinion this one - but, each to our own. I agree the Word 'Electricals' isn't an industry term BUT, it is a reference point term for those that aren't of the industry, and more importantly a reference made even by a 'Technical person' in trying to familiarise a none technical person with an aspect, (which to my mind is its important linkage)

It's a bit like talking about 'Computing' say that word within our industry as a descriptive and people will think you've just come from another planet - it is far too encompassing to use within its industry.

Sometimes you need to make that 'Bridge' that relates - this term does do it. It's all a matter of opinion but you do need to think outside of your own specialist box if the domain market has been your main game for a number of years, as it has mine

I am going to pull that comment a little-apart, if I may dashu1. . Sure, in Electrics We have the word "Electric/s" but that has been an adopted term/s to mean 'Electrical power Supply'. Your other reference to 'Mechanics'* (Mechanicals) is not a common 'Consumer' reference because it doesn't impact/interact with the non-specialist market. i.e. car goes to Garage - Job done. The 'Electrical/s' Market however interacts at a Consumer level. (*mechanical objects not being a common 'bolt-on' job)

Interesting to note, the comments on this and the other thread seem to be divided between those involved at a professional level to those that recognise the term from it's non-technical/electrical and to my mind 'Consumer' awareness perspective.
