'A bit unstable' doesn't quite cover it!

I probably should have also said "unreliable" and "out of date"! I'm not using it operationally yet though so I haven't really noticed these problems at all, I'm just going on what's been said by others.

Don't be nasty. It hasn't crashed for several hours.

I wasn't being nasty. Actually, I've been thoroughly enjoying the beta testing. It's been an interesting experience! I have every confidence that they will fix the problems in due course.

Forgive me if I am showing my ignorance/naievity, but if I were to attempt to develop my own script - bearing in mind I haven't ever done any proper web programming:

- is it possible to run an effective script from a desktop based Windows PC?
- if so, is php the thing to use?
- finally, if I got a script to work for the current speculative e-mail system, would a completely different approach be needed for the DAC when it is introduced?

Thanks for any assistance.

1) Possibly
2) Maybe
3) Yes

I'd suggest reading up on the subject. :)

Ah ha! Well I am using 47 lines of bash (a few comments + vars), but my new code is only 380 lines. Although I haven't worried about SMS integration (tart!!)

It is very useful to be instantly paged to know what names you have missed ;)

I would say the main features that are needed are auto spec counting and a system to spec concurrently or ability to move on through a list of names as and when they drop.

As for DAC, it is a beta period so nothing can really be expected of it (unless your one of the ones having a fit over it not working!) but it is currently doing a great impression of a yo yo.

As for brassneck DIY option - get a apache / mysql / php environment setup - http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html has all the stuff in it and its as simple as download > unzip and start the services (Read the documentation). Then get hacking about with some code.

Doing this I would say yes you can run it from windows PC, yes via PHP and spec emails and DAC are completly different.

Absolutely. It was hilarious to watch DC throwing their toys out of the pram :)

If you want a system that you can leave running, with a list of the domains that you are intersted in, it's a load of code, which includes some fancy coding to integrate PGP, TCP and SMTP. (I use Power Basic Console Compiler)

If you are happy to do a lot of work by hand, every day, then it's much simpler.

Unless the rules change, you will still be able to grab domains by email, before DAC sees them as being available. It's just that you will have to be much luckier.

Oh look, DAC's gone off....... No it's back on again.

A new product from Nominet (for Nominet members only). Domain Availability Checker. It allows bulk querying (within limits) of the WHOIS database without doing a traditional port 43 WHOIS lookup.

More details here.

It's in beta stage at the moment - I've played around with it a bit but it seems a bit unstable!

Thanks for the replies.Hmm,so basically for now best forget that and use the usual system.

DAC died about an hour after they all went home for the weekend at Nominet. So that's it until Tuesday. No testing this weekend.

It looks a long way off.

I demand compensation!

(or something)

seems to be working for me.

and yes, DAC is beta, so DC shouldn't have any room to complain. They've come up against some real competition from private catchers in the last 18months (me included) and should do some work on their own scripts. They still catch names but have missed every one of the prenoms I've had them monitoring - I caught a few myself and most went to tagNames, zaffer etc.

DAC works quite differently from whois - more code to write ;)
