Hi folks

I thought I would have a bit of a go at the predictive domaining thing and try to anticipate future markets, now I know this type of domaining is pretty speculative some of these things may pan out and some may not and I know there are many here that I probably should not have registered, that’s a result of being a know nothing newbie who probably needs to up there bipolar medication, there are many here that even with the very little I have learned up to this point I would not register now, I know I have been a bit of an idiot with many, but hopefully there are some that have a good chance of being worth keeping, some of these markets are pretty long term I know, but I am looking to be a long term investor and don’t mind keeping them 5 or 10 years or even longer (but a lot have a good chance of becoming popular in the next couple of years), if it is likely that the kind of value they may have will justify doing so. But I am new to domaining and pretty ignorant and the one thing I am learning is that a bad name is a bad name no matter how thriving the market may become, so with this in mind I am wondering which I should definitely keep and which I should definitely ditch, that’s the other thing I am learning is not to be afraid to show the shit the shovel. I am also interested to know what people think of the prospects of the markets in general. I have included links to various YouTube videos and other material that explain all about the area for those who may not be aware or know much about them, so hopefully those who are interested in future technology and predictive domaining will find some of the subjects and material of interest, I think some of these things are pretty cool, but then again I am a bit of a geek when it comes to anything to do with the future. So what do you reckon? Which would you keep and which would you ditch?

As always I am eternally grateful for any advice as I am still pretty clueless when it comes to domaining.

Many many thanks

I'd probably hang onto this one...
3dPrintingMachine.com

Not sure about any of the rest!

In general, if I register domains in "speculative" (i.e. future tech) fields, I try and secure THE domain for the niche. So it has to be .com or .co.uk, and it has to be the single best way of describing that niche. For example, TerabitEthernet.com. It may take too long for connections to get up to that level for it to be worth my while hanging onto the domain, but "gigabit ethernet" is now firmly established and networks are increasing in speed every few months (that's the "logic behind it" part out of the way!). However, I would never go any "deeper" than that speculatively, though, i.e. I wouldn't register something like TerabitEthernetCards.com or that sort of thing. I also wouldn't have registered a .net some other extension if the .com hadn't been available at the time, again because it's just too speculative and distant to be worth the gamble.

With 140+ names on your list, it's going to cost you US$12,000 approx. to keep them for 10 years. You have to take a deep breath and a big step back, and ask yourself if A) you're willing/able to carry that cost, and B) do you really, hand on heart, see that you're going to get more than US$12,000 of returns out of holding onto those names?

Given the amounts involved, you'd probably be better off buying 2-5 non-speculative, strong, descriptive domains describing markets that exist right now, and that advertisers are already fighting each other to target.

No I know I have bought a load of crap that I should not have, what I would like to do is keep maybe the top 20 assuming there are that many that are worth keeping if not then less, my problem is that I am pretty clueless as to which ones these may be.

If you absolutely must keep some, then these are the least worst...
3dPrintingMachine.com
BiometricWallet.com
BiometricWallets.com
FlexibleTelevision.com
HydrogenEngineCar.com
HydrogenEngineCars.com
HydrogenMoped.com
HydrogenMotorBike.com
HydrogenMotorBikes.com
HydrogenScooters.com
RapidPrototypingPrinter.com
RapidPrototypingPrinting.com

Having read through the list of names a number of times, there aren't any beyond the above that I'd put on the "keep" pile. And I'm dubious about most of the above as well, but at least they describe a specific product!

Others may have a different selection, of course...

Its very difficult to advise on this one.

No one knows what the future holds. You are the expert and you have looked into these domains.

If even you don't know, and youve done the research, how do you expect others to give you reliable advice.

Look..........You have a few options. As Edwin says be prepared to hold on to these for the long term - or sell for what you can get and move on. On the other hand while $12,000 is a substantial investment, if your gamble pays off its all worth it. Just be aware that it is a gamble that is by no means certain to pay off.

Another option is to delay your decision for a year/ 18 months and review these names again, then.

My feeling is that speculative domains make sense as part of an otherwise solid portfolio. So, if 90 % of your portfollio is made up of generic domains then there is no harm in taking a bet on some speculative domains. The problem arises when a major proportion of your domain names are speculative, because in the end you could be left with nothing.

The decision is yours alone and we can only make suggestions - perhaps hold on and do some more research? I'd hold on to the 3d geos. Why not delay your decision to, say xmas time 2011 when there might be more happening in these technology areas??

theres 3 on that list i would buy cheap as they will have to be held onto for at least 5 years or so even then they might fail
pm me if you want to sell

Edwin,

To plough through that long list of domains (more than once by the sound of it) for a newish poster is a very generous thing to do. I'm impressed.

Regards, Luke

Fully agreed Luke.

I would keep autopilotcars.com

I found your list quite interesting. When I first started out I went for a fair few future tech domains, mainly because I find future tech interesting, but these days I tend to concentrate on domains that can make money today.

You obviously take a great interest in future technology, and I think you've identified some interesting areas. I think perhaps where you could improve is in getting the domain right in terms of the keyphrase, that said, this is easier said than done with future tech. What I'm trying to say is many of the technologies might have potential, but some of the names are not the key generic and therefore will prove difficult to sell.

Anyway, here are the names I liked:

NeuroHeadset.net - The .com would be quite a strong domain.

SocialTelly.com - and yes, SocialTV.com would be better.

SocialTvNetworks.com

TelepresenceMe.com - Quite brandable, I like this one.

TouchProjectors.com - Nice domain. I own digitalprojectors.org and picoprojectors.co.uk.

SpeechToSpeechTranslators.com - Good domain.

TouchScreenProjectors.com - Good domain.

All OK for affiliate sites today:

323dTv.com
32inch3dTv.com
3d32InchTv.com
3d32Tv.com
3d42InchTv.com
3d42Tv.com
42inch3dTv.com
503dTv.com
50inch3dTv.com

Like tech shares, investing in tech domains is very high risk. With technology, it's so easy for something to go wrong and you not make the investment return. These days I tend not to invest in technology shares or domains, I prefer more "visibility", but I still take an interest in it.

Rgds

Augmented Reality or AR not sure what will be mostly typed, mentioned or used. Because if you search "AR Spain" Augmented Reality is the last thing Google thinks you mean.

But can say that WILL be a hit and have regged a hand full myself (just need to develop them now and NOT when the tech BOOMs.

The ones that will become more searched sooner are you £D screen size domains and so get a site on each NOW. ;)

Again a lot of in my eyes wasted money though. (been there done that)

Can I just say how grateful I am for your advice guys, especially Edwin I really do appreciate the time any of you have taken to read through my list, the fact that you have done so for a newcomer as already stated is extremely generous. You are helping a crazy fool who is still fumbling around in the dark to find his bearings, I really am very grateful.

Thanks again

I'm just being generous with what I have read - it looks like using Lithium batteries in vehicles will soon become a reality, but what form of lithium cells is still up in the air ( and that is a BIG hint).

OTOH lithium is very important when medicating people for bipolar disorders ...

I don’t suppose anybody thinks touchscreenpad.com is worth keeping? I was thinking in regards to the potential for the touch screen ipad or any other sort of touch screen pad.
