domain strategy quick sales small profit

Means absolutely nothing if it hasn't actually sold!

I'm not sure how long the .com has been available. I only came across it the other day. I searched Whois for the owner details of the .com and it shows that it is available to buy at $18k. I later found another agency listing it for £11.5k.

I understand that it does not mean that it will actually sell for that price and I also understand that it does not mean that the .org is necessarily worth anywhere near the same.

With another domain I entered the domain.co.uk version in my web browser to see what sort of a website (if any) had been built on it. I have the .com equivalent of the same and the .com equivalent and the .co.uk of the same name but with "the" in front of it (still makes sense with "the" in front). The type-in domain entry for the .co.uk came up with a "Premium Domain For Sale" sales page.

The point I am making in response to the quality of domain names issue is that these domain names (irrespective of their extensions?) seem to be of good quality to others with the same domains (different extensions).

So, as a newbie, back to my original question(s) where would you look to sell such a domain? Bear in mind this is my first stab at trying to sell domains so I, like the person who started this thread, am looking for some guidance.

My first idea was to find out the contact details of other domain owners with the same name domains but different extensions and to approach them (that is how I established the $18k; £11.5k .com was for sale).

Was this a reasonable initial idea? As this option now does not seem feasible because they are also for sale, what next?

Auction marketplaces? If so, which one? With a BIN option or not? With a reserve or not?

A broker? If so, how do you go about starting that ball rolling?

For those that have sold quality domains, what would you do? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi frank as others have said try and use past sales as an indicator to guide you on valuing domains.

http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/sold-domains.html gives a good overview on what's selling in the UK.
http://www.domainprices.co.uk/Domain_Sales_Prices.php can be used to check if anything similar to what your registering has sold in the past.

Finally http://www.dnjournal.com will give you a feel for what's selling internationally however just because something sells for a few 1000 in the .com doesn't necessarily mean it will work in the UK market but can be a good general indicator

With your .org example if you list it on sedo mls with a BIN it should feature in the premium section across most big registrars. there's usually nothing stopping you listing your domains on every sales platform to increase your chances of a sale

Thanks for the information and links. Most useful. I will check those.

Great stuff Anthony. I will try that one as an example. I have only recently-ish joined Sedo and noticed that my domain registrant is not listed as one of their preferred registrants for the mls Premium service. I will transfer it to one they list so that it gets best exposure.

Thanks again.

What domains are you trying to sell?

I'm sure you will be told pretty quickly if they're worth anything or not.

There's no point working hard to try and sell something no one will want to buy.

Yes, this advice is spot on.

Good domains sell themselves (though they may need a little "help")

Bad domains will never sell.

I have about 95 or so domains, some with websites built on, some not (mostly not). Just need to decide which ones to develop and keep and which ones to try and sell. I've pm'd you with some examples.

Thanks for the feedback.

When you're looking for companies to contact, try a Google search like the following (assuming your domain name is keyword1keyword2.co.uk):

intitle:"keyword1 keyword2" site:.co.uk

Do the search exactly as above, quotes and all. That will return a list of all the web pages that have the exact phrase "keyword1 keyword2" in the title of the page, and which are hosted on a .co.uk domain.

That's just the first step, of course. You then have to look through page after page of results, trying to identify the likely prospects.

A few things to look out for (not an exhaustive list)
- "keyword1 keyword2" is on the homepage rather than a subpage
- "keyword1 keyword2" is in the on-page title or the intro paragraph on the homepage
- The name of the company is "SOMETHING keyword1 keyword2" or they describe themselves as "SOMETHING keyword1 keyword2" in the intro text even if their company name is something else. However "SOMETHING keyword1 keyword2 SOMETHING" is a losing proposition.
- A search on keyword1 keyword2 (without the quotes) shows up plenty of Adwords

Thanks for the information. Not come across that approach before. Very informative.

First look at the niches your interested in, for example you mentioned seo tip, do you have any experience in seo? if not why would people want to come to your website? what would you write about?. Picking something your interested in makes writing about that subject easy. You really want to be aiming for quality content these days. For the record SEO TIPS / TOOLS etc can be monetised really well. There are loads of softwares that can be promoted etc, take a look at matthewwoodward's blog, as an example.

Any ways, if your thinking of going down the route of adsense, you want to make sure there are advertisers for that niche. Do a search on google for the main keywords of your domain and see if there are advertisers on the right hand side. If there isn't, look for something else.

Personally ive found product domains where the product is priced over £100, and there are over 1000 exact searches a month can generate a nice steady income. I don't bother with low priced items! Its a waste of time.
