Just wondering, is the Nominet registration system authored entirely from within or are outside coding houses contracted to do some of the work?

One version (went live in 2000) was written by a contractor, but she joined us soon after. Since then all automaton coding has been done in house. The DAC is mainly coded by a contractor but we have known him for years. All code is regularly reviewed by a number of other developers.

We are currently recruiting for developers and SAs, jobs close tomorrow: http://www.nominet.org.uk/about/jobs/

hi

this has happened a few times now so wondering if it has happened to anyone else.

Been watching a name for a few hours, then suddly get the B,36 message. so stop the dac script, restart it a minute later and whay the name has dropped hmmm...Like i say happened a few time.

SO does the automaton monitor what names are being monitored ??

Anyone else noticed this.

Hmm

That is interesting. Were you DACcing a certain name with fix speed for 10 hours? You did not get certain block then suddenly you get 36 sec block?

As far as I know B,36 means you were actually daccing around 50 ms speed so you should actualy had seen that block before. Anway what I mean is you could get maximum of B,48 and since you seem a smart guy you should be adjusting your speed after that.

There's your problem, for that sort of money you will only get a suit.
Maybe you should splash out and get an old school l33t hippy.

I thought hippies didn't care about money, but then again I've always had the impression that some hippies were living in a world artificially supported by the invisible umbilical plugged into their parents bank accounts.

One point though. Low pay tends to drive corrruption. Controversial? Moi? ;-)
Oxford is quite a pricey town, isn't it?

Eh? Please explain in words of one syllable or less.

You don't think that hippies understand br34d?

Anyway.

The point is that the Internet is still frontier country. (It won't be for long, soon AOL/Microsoft/Google/etc will work out how to charge you, for what used to be free.)

Meanwhile. As well as employing the suits who have degrees in IT and business studies, you might consider somebody who understands difficult sums and thinks freely.
Unfortunaly they cost £100K+ and probably won't be arsed to turn up for the interview.

The Internet hasn't been frontier country since the NSA plugged their line-eater in, and that was years ago...

I disagree with your argument, however aside from that, griping about charging people for what used to be free is not a tenable position for drop-catchers :)

P.

P.S. Am I alone in thinking Jay is a bit geeky[1] for posting here at 10:30pm?

[1] In a good way :)

I think you must live in a parallel universe to me. I think (hope) that our rates of pay are good enough to attract the best talent and from the quality of the people here I think that has been achieved.

Just so you know, nobody in the technical dept wears a suit, except me on occasions. In fact I don't think anyone else owns one. None of them have degrees in IT and business studies, though several have PhDs in obscure scientific areas. Apart from me and a couple of others, they all drink real ale. And just to round it off the main OS they have on their desktops is OSX closely followed by Linux.

Possibly.
I was putting Nominet in the same basket as other companies that I have dealings with. Maybe you are small enough to escape being controlled by the bean counters and HR department.
