Diamond Jubilee

I have to say there has been a huge amount of effort put into this holiday and just shows what Britain can do.

Bailey you're right it can do us proud

I bat with the others on this one. Much adoo about nothing.

In times of austerity what a waste of money. 6000 police officers yesterday, don't know how many today. I liked the pics of Pippa, mummy, daddy and friends, sipping champers and waving to the minions. Hooray! absolutely splenid!

I know, I know, it gives us all a sense of pride, blah, blah. In reality, the further north of the capital you travel, the more irrelevant it all becomes. Very much like the olympics.

In fact, when you come as far north as where I live, it becomes nothing. I own a dvd rental shop and had the best Sunday trading in over 2 years.

God bless her majesty and all who televise her.

I'm just watching sky news right now and seeing all the pompery.

All splendid. I for one would have been more proud if her majesty had forgoed the lot and donated our tax payers money to perhaps build a new primary school instead. We could have called it "jubilee primary" and it would have outlived her, Charles and all our memories of the river pageant, a concert and some fireworks.

Just my 2 cents.

Trouble is scooter - the world would be a pretty sad-place, if too much 'caring and sharing' took up your life

Probably not - during the last government I saw a school and a hospital built that are now closed.

Personally, I think it was great to do something just for the sake of celebration and not for a cause. Things like this create positive emotions.

Live in the moment, and be happy now - thats the secret to life. If you can do that, you have everything.

That is exactly what I see Bailey. What I witness is 3 days of proposterous costs to show we care and would like to share in her celebrations.

Like politicians, are they not meant to lead by example? Are we not in the biggest recession since the war?

Sorry, I for one do not like to see my money being spent on this sh*t. She's not short of a bob or 2. If she wants a big party let her pay for it herself.

You couldn't have been more proud though could you because you wouldn't have even heard about it.
You do sound like those people who want to donate wealth that hasn't even been created.

That's a shame. What has been spent on this would most likely have been enough to keep both runing for a couple of years.

The cause is her jubilee and that is what you are paying for celebrating.

Pehaps down south it does but as I stated, the further north you come, the more irrelevant is becomes. There is not one house with bunting or flag flying where I live.

Doesn't mean we don't support the queen.

Ouch did I touched a nerve there? :D

What I see is a govenment spending what has been created (my tax money. Private sector, real cash, not pretend public spending cash) on pompous lavishness. It is being spent on one of the richest people in the UK

OK bring it on everyone. I can take it ...

You make it sound like it was a private function for HM - yes its cost a lot of money, but millions of people joined in and got enjoyment from it.

Where do you stand on Christmas? If people cut 80% of their spending on Chrimbo and paid medical insurance we could do away with the NHS which is the biggest drain on the countries finances.

At least the Jubilee celebrated a real person, not like Christmas.

have loved the Jubilee so far!

Great occassion and exceptional celebrations!

Makes me even more proud to be British!

Only wish there were celebrations that brought Britain together more often!

There was private funding for at least some of the events.

I haven't seen an event, in such long time, that has brought a large part of the nation together.

In my town there was a family fayre, and judging by numbers and size of town good 40-50% could have been there. Money was raised for local charities, everyone had a good time and simply nice to see. If this was happening around the country, it can only be a good thing.

It brought a smile. Yes money could have been spent elsewhere but in reality would have been absorbed quickly and quietly not have had as big an impact or reach as many people.

I think the weakness in your argument might be that pound for pound, whoevers money it is, it could not have been spent better, the benefits are too enormous to list.

Perfectly put! :)

The tax debate is a fallacy! The vast, overwhelming majority of the celebration was NOT paid for by "the public".
http://www.channel4.com/news/who-pays-for-the-diamond-jubilee

And when you think of the boost to tourism, the restaurant/hotel sector etc., the few millions spent by London on things like the outdoor screens, cleaning etc. fade into complete insignificance.

cc976a has a very good point. It is nice to see it brings communities together for their street parties but those that want to would be doing this anyway without the mass expense of the 3 day spectacular in London.

If that was the case, surely we would be making it an annual event? What better way to unite the people. But there might be a cost problem there, just like some think there is with this one. It is my money that has been spent on it and i'm not happy about it. Convince me it has been a worthy investment.

Can you please list some of the benefits to me? As I fail to see them. (granted, the burger vans will have done well in London)

Come on max99x, don't be shy. Apart from the "feel good" factor that ends at 9am tomorrow, what else is there? Are we going to be making money from this?

Again, I state the further away from London you travel, the more irrelevant it all becomes and most likely all the so called benefits.

It has been reported that the number of road closures for parties in Scotland was somewhere between 100 and 200, with 30 or so concentrated in Edinburgh alone, compared to an estimated 10,000 in England. .... BBC News

I think Blossom was leaving a little hint that perhaps things were a bit extravagant for her liking too.

Was that it? come on all you Royalies, give it to mee ard. I can take it!
You just spent my money! Defend yourselves.

Give me that sucker punch.

ouch! Edwin just delivered it!

If they haven't spent my money, there is no argument.
(why didn't they spend my money? is it not good enough? :))

As a related aside, for less than 1/1000th of the cost of the Olympics (to the public, anyway, which is what matters) the 4-day Jubilee spectacular has probably done at least as much as the Other Event will to raise Britain's profile around the world.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ol...or-Olympics-as-normal-tourists-stay-away.html

reality of olympics 'bringing in' money

also I honestly feel 95% at least of the country are disinterested in either and anyone who can would want to go abroad to escape both on holiday are

the olympics is a nightmare for londoners, everyone I know down there is escaping if they can for the duration

but olympics is same as jubilee
shoved down our throats and media will not shut up about it and block out real news will endless stories and column inches of this drivel

ignorance is bliss I guess
