Yep ,I find it hard to not register a good name when I see it ,BUT
I do now try and look ahead and think carefully "am I going to use
this domain" OR "can I sell this domain" and if I cannot answer one
or both "yes" then I forget ir............and find someone else registers
it 1 day later. At one stage I had, believe or not, around 5,000 names
and when I run those lists thru the domain pro most are now taken.
5000! wow - still building my database slowly - not even a thousand yet - but the app i'm using aint very robust so cracks out on big lists - but just using it to keep an eye on whats dropping - unless dropcatcher wins for me then i'm a spectator!
got to start marketing some of mine just to recoup some money
do you thing - looking at the discussions over the last 6 months it just doesn;t seem worth it - i know the numbers of domains available is getting smaller but the competition to grab the good ones is intense and the £600 + a year to have a TAG means you have to get the "good ones" and sell them. I think perhaps that there must be a more complete service we can offer as domain managers or something like that - I want long term income rather than short term gains
In that case I would forget the TAG and concentrate of finding affiliate
programs with the likes of Commission Junction and Tradedoubler
and put some banners up.
We have renewal costs running into a few hundred pounds per week, which is worrying, but sales are steadily rising. Overall the business model is working and showing a return on time and investment.
Yep it sounds very familiar to myself and at end of the day
the chances of grabbing a domain worth thousands or tens
of thousands as a resale value is unlikely and nowadays it
is all down to can the domain be utilised for revenue earning
,either as an affiliate or as a prime business web site. I wish
I had not been tied in knots by other business in the the mid
1990's as things would have been different.
DG
I would put to the back of your mind managing to grab a domain
worth tens of thousands as it expires as that,as we agree, is pretty
,much non existent. The best way to "make a living" from domains
nowadays is to out them to use with affiliate programs ,and if you get
an offer to buy the domain then thats a bit extra. The only way you
will make a "fortune" is think of a good business idea and use a domain
for your own business.
