Wanted: Domain Appraisal cris.ps

Pete if you could get cris.ps to #1 or high up in the search engines when people search for 'crisps', that would be a whole different matter.

There are quite a few small crisp manufacturers catering for niche markets such as organic crisps or crisps with unusual flavours and I think this is a growing industry albeit made up of small firms. Small firms like these are run by people with vision who might see the advantage of a well ranking, catchy domain. Ordinary switched off people don't do crazy things like setting up crisp factories! I seem to remember one of these was on an episode of the Apprentice.

A well ranking domain could be of interest to these kind of companies looking for a quick way to boost brand awareness. Getting to the top spot would not be easy though.

I agree with jasman. If you can add to the value of the domain, with a decent ranking, it will surely appeal to somone. There's potential there, but it might not to easy to realise. Whether it's worth thetime and effort to get a decent ranking isn't an easy question to answer.

Crisp companies often do run novelty campaigns though, and I could see how it could be used for something like that. Walkers could set up a funny site where you could invent your own flavour of crisps for instance, which would be hosted at cris.ps. That kind of thing.

Well thanks for all your feedback guys, it's developed into an interesting little thread!

If no crisp companies reply (which they haven't yet!) I'm liking the idea of using it as a URL shortener...

God, now I have to delve into the world of hosting and site designing!

Any recommendations on the best hosts??

If I'm going off-topic please do ignore me!

Indeed, However If I was the Marketing Manager for any Company receiving this type of approach. The first thing I would do is pass it to somebody with the relevant knowledge (assuming I didn't have a tech /net background)

Check 1. what is the .ps extension - 'ah the newly released Palastine extension'

Bit of a hot potato (pardon the pun) is that one - who knows who we may inadvertently upset. Not so much a marketing dream as a possible marketing nightmare.

End game

I don't know, I'm willing to bet that most people don't know what the .ly part of bit.ly is - they're willing to accept that it's just a URL shortener.

With all the .tv, .info, .biz, .me, .org .jobs extensions floating around, not everyone associates a domain extension with a country; in fact I'm willing to bet that the majority of people don't, unless it's one they're familiar with such as .co.uk.

Love Jasmans idea and I would say probably the best route but would need lots of cash and knowledge to run a big site like that.

Value = reseller £0 end user £500 if a company to buy it ?

Good luck

I think the novelty of a crisps-themed bookmark/ short URL site would go along way to making it popular because it would be so original and add fun to what is a useful but pretty boring service. It would ideally be highly visual, so you could drag a crisp from one packet and drop it onto another to move URLs between folders. When you delete a URL, the crisp would get eaten and crisp-munching sound effect would be played. When you delete a folder, air could be pumped into the script packet and hand smack it making a pop sound. Whenever you create a new folder, a new crisp packet icon would appear and be opened and you would hear the sound of a bag of crisps being opened.

You could have competitions to win large amounts of crisps (if you had plenty of traffic you would get the crisps free as crisp manufacturers would happily sponsor that sort of thing). For example, one way to build up traffic and start getting it used would be to have a competition for who uses cris.ps short URLs in their blog the most. The winner could win however many packets of crisps as he had posted cris.ps URLs. When you think about it there are endless spin-offs to do with crisps that could make a site which provides a useful service entertaining at the same time, so basically it would do the same thing as other similar sites like bit.ly but would be fun.

Jasman offer this guy some money and set it up, sounds ace, love your vision mate, wish I could give it a crack

If someone got to #1 for a search term I was targeting (on a commercial level) and then tried to sell me the site, I'd be pretty irritated to be honest. Probably because I know my manager would be annoyed and it would have wasted a lot of time/energy/money trying to get above them.

Think the URL shortener is the best idea for this name. It's a novelty at the end of the day, maybe for a games/promotion site or a short marketing campaign it would work, but it's not suited to a proper site.

Jasman - That's exactly what I was thinking re: a highly visual shortener - and a full 'crisp' becoming a half-eaten crisp once you've shortened....although your ideas take it a step further!

All I need now is someone to program it! Not sure my basic/out of date HTML skills will cut it!!

Anyone know anyone who does this kind of stuff as a hobby?!

All this talk of crisps is making me hungry! :-|

Do you think you may be getting carried away with this?

Try and flog it to Walkers and see how you go.

I don't want to put a dampener on it but if you are looking for 'hobbyists' to code it then it probably means you don't have the budget available to make it work.

Hmmm... A URL shortener on a Palestinian domain name that only makes sense to UK users - since Americans call what we call "crisps" chips, and to them our "chips" are called fries ...

Sounds a bit half baked to me... :)

I agree with this however any big brand looking to buy the domain will do due diligence and sadly there's a good chance the Palestinian link could scupper the deal. An alternative viewpoint is that a controversial link could generate massive amounts of exposure, depends how brave their marketing team are feeling...

It's a shame as I love the novelty of the domain and some of the ideas on here have been great but it's a close call on whether to invest much time and money on this one.

I don't see why a domain should be considered controversial because it is Palestinian. The main risk from a domain perspective would be if Israel attacks Palestine's communications infrastructure and the domains stop resolving.

Yes it is, my issue with it was that the company owns both make-a-swisssh.com and make-a-swish.com, yet chose to use the former for a TV advertising campaign.

Hmmm... a bit like someone being mad enough to compare the meerkat?
