Copying an old site

surely 120 lines is the whole page and not just the part that needs replacing/removing?

It's definitely 120 lines of code mate, there's a script first followed by several different sections of code and text that make up the text and image on the header, it's really bloated the way they've written it. In the source code, it starts just after the <body> tag and takes up half of the html in the code, proper bloated stuff.

Just noticed there is HTTrack code inserted in to every file as well, great ffs :rolleyes:

I've entered quite a bit of text into it before, you'll have to give it a go to know.

I'll try it on one page and see what occurs.

Ah, best to just do it in parts then if the code to change is the same on every page.

Good luck with it, it may take a bit of fannying around to sort but will definitely be quicker than hand editing every page!

The one I just downloaded looks like it's working but it isn't, sod it, I think I'll just do it all by hand, these tools aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Might be worth looking for someone to do it all for you. If its as simple as copying and pasting hundreds of pages I'm sure that you could find someone from some part of Asia that would be more than happy to do it for a decent price.

@ Jamie, I wouldn't trust them in case they put code in the site.

@ Scott, that site says "Warrick will not be accepting new jobs at the moment". Probably costs a fortune anyway and this is not something I'm looking to spend any money on.

It has taken me since I last posted on here on Nov 3rd, doing as much as possible each day, and I've just uploaded the last page and the site is now fully completed :) My hands are killing me with the RSI, my eyes aren't much better either lol

The domain was on Sedo for 6 days and was showing as PR 6 during that time, I then changed nameservers to my webhost, put up an index page and uploaded other pages as I worked on it.

I noticed someone on here said there was a Google PR update a few days ago, I checked and it had dropped down to PR 5, at that time the domain wasn't listed in Google at all even as "site:sitename.co.uk" but, yesterday I noticed it was now indexed and top or near the top of page 1 for a lot of related terms, I got another 100+ pages finished off yesterday and this morning, so hopefully it'll see an increase in traffic, it was doing around 60 uniques per day on Sedo.

I've not done any site work for ages but, doing this might just get me back in to doing that stuff again.

Warrick is free, you can download and install the script for free, they did offer an online service whereby they ran the script for you and for that they no longer accept submissions.

Ahh, wasn't aware of that, it was worded like it was just a paid for service. Just had a look at the link to download it, it's called warrickv2-2-1.tar.gz and not knowing what tar.gz is, I Googled it and didn't understand any of it as it's all techy descriptions, such as this, looks like you need some sort of degree in computer coding just to open it haha:

what is .tar.gz? How we can open it?

And the answer to the question was:

Well a "gz" file is a file that was compressed with "gzip". You'd use:

Code:
$ gzip -d file.tar.gz

You'd get file.tar as the resultant file. From there you'd use tar (tape archive) to extract the files:

Code:
$ tar fx file.tar

If you're not sure of the file output (whether it creates its own subdirectories), you might create a temporary subdirectory and copy the .tar file to it before untarring it.

You can combine commands as well. gzip lets you uncompress to a stream:

Code:
$ gzip -dc file.tar.gz | tar fx -

That will decompress and untar the file.

WTF, obviously not something I could attempt to download/install :)

.tar.gz is like a zip file. If windows won't open the archive automatically then you can try something like http://www.7-zip.org/

BTW, I used WinHTTrack for a project recently and I can't remember it adding any text to the actual pages. One thing to bear in mind though it didn't grab anything like .cgi scripts and images in javascript (like custom google map markers).

Since the site started getting indexed in Google on the 10th, the traffic has increased from the 60 visits per day when it was parked on Sedo. It got 76 visits on the 10th, 107 visits on the 11th and 221 visits on the 12th, it earned a couple of quid yesterday from Adsense I've put on there, I'll be happy if the traffic stays the same or continues to rise.

@ Pete, I think you may be right, it had the HTTrack text on the home page, but having just checked again, the other pages had text on them from another site who I think they might have been involved in making the site, and they added some text to the pages.

I'm thinking about putting some stop smoking aff product banners or links on the site, does anyone know what are the best converting stop smoking products? I'm looking for retailers who do their own in house aff programs, rather than through the likes of Affiliate Window, Affiliate future, Commission Junction etc

Also, most of the pages on the site have blank meta tags for these 2:

<meta name="keywords" content="" />
<meta name="description" content="" />

Is it worth me putting something brief on each one or does it not really matter that much for ranking? Can I get away with putting the same keywords in the "keywords" meta tag on each page, I would just put 4 or 5 of the same keywords on each page, or do Google look down on duplicate keyword for each page?

The site is ticking along alright at the moment, in the analytics graph there are a couple of dips in traffic on Saturday the 17th and 24th, then up slightly on the Sundays after and then a bigger jump on Monday, before dropping each day towards Saturday again.

It was different this week, it had the usual drop on Saturday but then traffic has gone back up and has remained pretty constant or increased, yesterday (last dot on the graph) was the highest yet with 287 visits.

It's still PR 5 and I'm going to have a few articles written to add to new pages to see if it will rank for a couple of specific keywords I'm after.
