connected.co.uk £80k

I'm not suggesting that it's the case here, but what about if you discovered that a huge corporation was looking to launch a product using a generic name.

If you could arrange to buy that .co.uk for an apparently huge sum of money, it would get the attention of the above corporation and set the starting price.

Depending what the site is for Connected is a great one for social netwoking / ISP provision.

Connect / Connected - the former implys something that will happen, the latter is already happening.

Big prices do happen, this is a few quid over what I would expect for the name however it is a decent one.

It sure is good news, also the end users are more and more comming to realise the power of generic domains.

Done a bit of digging.

Went to see if anybody has registered 'Connected' as a TM and there is one applied for in networking and all things computing. Which lead to:
Google 'DivX connected'

This must be incedibly positive thing for uk generic names.

the yanks will hopefully take .co.uk more seriously now.

It highlights the uk domain market potential - it almost makes me feel that my insane.co.uk might have some mileage after all... :p

I suggest you donate it to MN

There has got to be something fishy about it! If that is worth £80k then some better generics on here must be worth zillions... (to the right end users)

Well 'to the right end users' is key. You are always going to have the occasional domain that is worth mega to one individual/organisation, but way way less to anyone else in the market. You put the domains out there and if you are lucky your ticket comes up. I sold crazyplanet.com for £20k three years ago to some crowd that had a patent by that name in the States. No-one else would have paid more than a grand. Many of my similar generic domains have gone for average market rates. But once in a while Bingo! It's a crazy old planet.

I don't think the yanks will start snapping them up, they accept .co.uk & .de are the most successful cctlds's, but that's it.
However, your domain insane.co.uk is worth min. low - mid £xxxx min. anyway.
Someone could well come in for it one day as it is so brandable & could be used for so many things. It's a great name, don't sell too cheap.

Agreed, my recent sales thread on here had over 1000 views and sold a fair few domains, the same thread on dnforum had 35 views and zero enquiries/offers. Most yanks don't seem to 'get' the .co.uk extension.

Most don't have a passport. Say no more.

Their 'accepted.co.uk' business has TV adverts that I've seen numerous times. They clearly have the budget. Who'd have thunk that past tense domains could provide such a profitable niche.

I use approval.co.uk

I guess that making me feel good!

it seems accepted that this is a genuine sale and obviously good news for the UK market,

so on another note, is domain names the best place for money launderers. if somone buys jfdhgdfj.co.uk for £6 and sells it to mr smith for £50,000 obviously mr smith doesn't exist and has just sent £50,000's worth of dodgy cash into someone's bank account. There by someone walking away with £50,000 of legit clean money.

After all domains don't have any set value, I think Her Majesty's inland revenue would find that hard to prove. Someone somewhere must be upto this.

If that does become an issue, then it would be easy enough for Nominet/Gov to monitor all domain sales/transfers/registrations and see if there are patterns, whereby A sells to B sells to C sells to A etc. Dirty money in one end, clean out the other.

I doubt the launderers would want to spend £50k and not get it back! So there would need to be a trail of sales to follow.

I think the Gov already carry out this kind of analysis on eBay sales (on a smaller scale of course)

money laundering

money laundering is a serious issue and my understanding is that the likes of sedo have necessary checks....it is against UK law not to check transactions above certain level
