Anyone got any idea what city names are worth, where the population is between 100,000 and 200,000 people?

Trade and end user prices

If you are talking dot coms quite a bit of money. Woking sold not so long ago for £8,000 I believe at Sedo. Population 100,000

What I'm more interested in is large cities rather than small villages, something like Peterborough, Oxford or Blackpool.

What value would you put on those for example?

Sorry should have said it's .co.uk names I'm interested in.

i have seen several .co.uk's sell for around the 10k mark.

not saying thats the standard (could be much higher or lower) 10k for a good city name seems like a bargain to me.

the existing traffic would be what? - maybe from 500 to 2000 uniques a day?

The number of things you could do to it to get revenue are almost unlimited.

I'd say you've got grounds to ask a decent whack.

Depends as always on who the buyer is and how much they want it.

Personally I'd put it/them under the 'keep this one' list.

Depends on the "desirability" of the city. Can't think of a gentler way to put it, but not all cities are born the same. A city with a rich revenue stream from tourism, a thriving and wide-base local economy, good infrastructure etc. is going to be worth more (as a domain) than an equal population city in a depressed economic area, or one that isn't on anyone's "tourist map of Britain".

Stepping on eggshells here, but in your example list (Peterborough, Oxford or Blackpool) Blackpool or Oxford have a lot more value than Peterborough, because of tourism and history and "stuff". And all 3 will have different demographics...

people living in those cities will probably be the most likely buyers and I'm not sure they'd agree with your analysis :)

Though agreed, for tourism value, then tourist cities are better.

Good point, although I picked those three for no other reason than they all had about the same population figures.

Anyone care to stick their neck out and give a value to them or does anyone know of any similar sales over the last year or two. I seem to remember that liverpool.co.uk was offered for sale for a short time after it dropped and the figure of £25k comes to mind, could be wrong.

Looking through the excellent domainprices.co.uk lists (likely to be the best info you'll find) there's a real lack of geographic sales.

Earth.co.uk sold for 4,500 pounds, but that's a bit bigger than your target area :)

China.co.uk sold for 7,000 pounds and Germany.co.uk for 3,000 pounds, again not really comparable.

I've mentioned the above because, unless I've missed it, there were NO visible sales of UK geographicals in the period 2004-present. Of course, there are almost certain to have been a number of behind the scenes sales, but none have ever been made public.

Guess that foils my plan to flog glastonbury.co.uk and glastonbury.info if times get rough. Maybe I can raise a tenner with abusing.me.uk :)

I've noticed a company called W B P Data Ltd buying up city domains recently - london.co.uk, manchester.co.uk + loads more. if you have one to sell it may be worth approaching them.

Correct. And there were buyers ready. But then I regained consciousness....

basingstoke.co.uk sold for £3k I believe.

Actually, they've just updated the Whois. AFAIK it's the same people who had the presence of mind to register most of them in the prenom days.
