I've noticed in the last few days that the "Advanced bids" tab on DomainLore (the one where people can bid in advance on dropping domains and commit themselves to paying that much as an auction bid if the name is caught and put up to auction) there are a lot of "blatant TM" names.

Could this be a sneaky tactic by somebody angling for a really good name on that day, and saying to themselves "Hey, I'm willing to drop £50 or £100 on names I don't want by bidding on them at DomainLore just to get catchers chasing smoke" because quite a few catchers seem to use DL as at least one "signal" of what to go after?

Or am I over-thinking it :)

Note: to avoid any ambiguity, my headline refers to the "cheek" of those bidders, not DL of course!

I think someone really wants them. I don't see why they would choose TM names over some random non-TM names.

As some members won't catch obvious TM domains, myself included, regardless of if there is a bid or not, they'd actually be putting themselves at a disadvantage by choosing TM names.

Unfortunately, there is always a market for those names - I think you're reading too much into it...it is what it is.

Weird, they're showing as 'private auction only', does that mean DL are allowing dodgy names, just not letting the public see? Will be interesting to see if someone catches them and puts them up.

At the bottom of the page.

*private auction only - this domain name will not be eligible to be sold in a public auction. The auction could only be started to run between private parties who has expressed previous interest by placing advanced bid.

Just noticed this on DL, surely that limits the potential sale value of names or am I reading it wrong?

Cheers Foz, didn't even notice the asterisks!

@Aiden I think the blatant trademarks limit the potential sales value, I don't think there are a lot of people using domainlore interested in names like that.

It lets catchers with no scruples help domainers with no clue :)

Sorry, so are these private auctions simply for "blatant trademarks" or is the facility for any name and who decides which name is private and which isn't. I have never been able to see these names before they drop; not sure if that's the same for everyone or just newbies with a 2 rating.

I am off to read the T&C's

As most are for today, are they any good domains dropping that may indicate the above is true, (I've not noticed any good ones but I'm not an expert  )

Just in line with what Edwin originally said, there was a prebid of £50 for googleoptimisation.org.uk, which is now FTR?

Yes, FTR. I don't see any members here willing to pick that one up.

It was caught, and deleted by an acorn member who posted in this thread I think?

Still probably true Edwin.

Reminds me of those whois services that used to go register the domain someone searched for on their website within about 10 minutes of them searching it and finding it available. Pre- the banning of domain tasting of course.

That was always a wheez searching for <random handprint on keyboard>.com and seeing these cheesy registrar go register it for themselves.

Hardly a surprise there's underhanded angles being sought on the internet.
