I'm going to say what I think would be the best option RE paying to be a member, of course these are just my opinions & as they're only opinions I'm sure many people will think I'm totally wrong, which is fine.
If a paid subscription was optional (like it is now) but where people can donate how ever much per month or annually, whatever they think is fair, whether it be £1/5/10/20 per month 50/100 a year - I think a lot of people would go along with that as long as you reminded them how helpful the forum is every now and again
With the above method the people happy to give some money will, and those who aren't will still stick around
If people are forced to pay however, those willing to pay will, and those who aren't will leave and branch off to a new or existing forum and that will be a shame to split acorn apart
I would worry if that happens that so many people would leave that acorn would die soon after
Those are my thoughts and concerns.
