Blockchain domain names

Bit behind the times, I've just been reading a little about blockchain domain names

They're names that can be used as wallets and host websites via a wallet

Unstoppable sell .crypto but are they just somehow aligning a domain to a wallet address? can any domain be tied to wallet addresses?

don't think any domain can. This is essentially blockchain linked I think. Seems to be more for payments as far as i can see. So rather than send crypto to s6djsdhgfjshgfs8dy7!!@££$$. you send to. person.crypto. Although looking.... everysingle worder ive put in says reserved for later date.

it says on their website

" In order to send and receive cryptocurrency using your domain, you will use wallets that have integrated our software. You are also able to use your own self custody wallet to hold domains."

I just found this - https://www.theregister.com/2020/03/31/opera_android_dot_crypto/ so I guess because it's not part of icann it's not a normal domain and just part of their software?

So could anyone develop something similar and use whatever they like to create short hand wallet addresses?

Yeah don't expect any top one's sitting there free. There's still plenty of decent ones depending on what you're after but I don't know how far the .crypto will go versus ICANN domains. Worth getting your name in it at last. Digital currencies are the future. All the central banks are getting in on their own digital currencies.
