Best UK Hosting??

Thanks for this everyone.

I'm being told that its a good deal for that price.

But our tech guy says; I normally go with one of the Host Europe group companies, Webfusion, Heart Internet etc - mainly because their setup is solid, they are not reselling, own their own datacentres etc so theres no middle men involved.

The servers tend to be pretty solid, had very few issues with them over the years and the support is good

mdrussell I'm a bit confused as to why you'd be thanking people for recommenadation here, when its me who is looking for feedback on the best of whats out there in the UK market and your services as theyve been brought up here in my string?

Jim.

Jim,

I try and thank everyone that recommends us. You can see that in previous threads on Acorn. No malice, just me being appreciative that people do say good things.

HostEurope operate some of their own datacentres and take space in larger facilities in others. In the UK, it's mostly the latter. HeartInternet are in the Node4 datacentre in Derby. Webfusion are in the Equinux datacentre in Slough.

We own and operate all of our own equipment and take space in Timico's datacentre in Nottingham. So while smaller, we have the same approach.

And being smaller customers enjoy a more personal service.

Matt

The measure of a host is two-fold. Firstly how good the basic hosting service is that you get normally when everything is running smoothly (% uptime, bandwidth, server spec etc). And secondly how quickly and fully they can resolve a problem, whether server failure, a hack, or some other issue. All too often the latter is an issue with very large hosts because they employ support staff who get just a week's training and don't have a deep knowledge of the technology. You can be with a hosting company for years and if there haven't been any problems you would never know how well they can handle them, so would recommend the host to others. But they may not have what it takes when the heat is on. Hence it's a good idea to search for web host reviews and get several opinions.

Wow, some fairly strong opinions here.

So two questions:

Dedicated: Is it still the way to go?

Cloud: I've heard while cheaper because you dont have the cost issues of the above - it is defintiely (at this stage) not the way for a business that hopes to grow quickly and there may be security issues??
