I've started the application with Nominet to become a registrar. In the early stages, there are a series of questions asking you to explain, basically, how you will service your clients / registrants. Do I really have to blag my way all through that, or can I just say in each box that I will be registering domains for personal use and so this doesn't apply?

Yep, just put it's for personal use only.

Ok thanks Grant, that's a relief! I was about to conjure up some imaginary web development company. Are they generally happy to accept "personal use" applicants? And do you know roughly what kind of turnaround I can expect?

They've always been happy with it in the past. Not sure on turnaround time, it's been a long time since I applied.

Yes, I just put "for my own use only" in every box or something like that.

After you do that you will have to complete an online test with multiple choice answers. It took me about an hour because I knew nothing and had to read up on everything on the nominet website.

I think it took me a few days in total to do everything including pay etc, maybe 4.

Yeah I read that in the guidance! Is it timed, or can I just sit there with the Nominet website open in a window and keep finding the answers?

Took the test Friday last, it's not a timed test and you can save as you go along. The help pages can be opened alongside the test page.

Thanks Dave, that's good to hear. Not so much a "test" then... more a "we're going to make sure you go and read about stuff you should know" exercise!

Thanks everyone for the help, I'll be embarking on the registrar journey in the morn.
