Wanted: Website Review Beautiful World - New baby Rebuilt

I'm sorry to say to write Beautiful World off based on comparing it to this (which is just hacky sub page (that gets some traffic)

Yep some traffic, 2m unique visitors a month, 4m page views, some traffic..

Nothing to strive for, very hacky.

So, seeing as that is hacky, and "This is an exceptional name, with massive potential" how many millions of visitors can Admin expect a month?

Interesting, 2m pm not actually that much.. I thought it would be more.

The point is the reddit page is irrelevant in this scenario, based on how they are set up and what they are trying to achieve - you can't compare them.

When I see BeautifulWorld.com I assume it's going to be images

When I go on the websites homepage, I'm greeted by pictures

If it then has to be explained to me "this site isn't about the pictures!" then who is in the wrong?

Besides, If the pictures on the site aren't suppose to be the beautiful part what is, the text?! it's not beautifully written poetry or story telling, it's factual information

If it then has to be explained to me "this site isn't about the pictures!" then who is in the wrong?

The site already generated traffic and by updating the design and adding more well-written pages, it will generate more and be profitable via Adsense.

What's not to like?

What's not to like?

How many hours would you need to spend on this, how much would you need to pay for content, how much for links, to make any money?

Is anyone reading this thread and thinking "what a great idea for a site, how can I copy this! or do something very similar"

If the answer is no one, then is it really a good idea?

It's a nice domain name, but the domain name doesn't matter if people are just coming from google anyway and there's no need for much trust/prestige when the end goal is clicking ads.

What's not to like is it doesn't seem like the best use of someones time/resources

Agreed there is no doubt some hours need to be grinded out on content etc. But I would expect a site like this in the end scenario to be picked up by some bigger players as a nice little bolt-on, one obvious sector that springs to mind is the travel industry.

I think the domain is classy. You could indeed build this out on bootiful-wurld.guru, but some how I don't think it would have the same panache with any serious advertisers. Or if sold to 'a brand', I think it would add trust to your 35yo+ end users who actually have some disposable income to spend, (yes I'm sorry to say its now well acknowledged now that most of the younger gen hanging out on social media sites all day, don't have twopence to scratch their arse with, and looking at the quality of the comment streams on Reddit, I wonder how many will be booking a 21-day Aegean Isles cruise or 2 weeks in Fiji.

The great thing about sites like this is that the content is evergreen and the Adsense income (with affiliate potential too) is money for nothing.

How much does an article cost to add? £20 tops probably. But adding content is an investment, but if you target the right content, then traffic and income will go up.

I'm not sure Steve is going to find it easy to rank for some of the content he's chosen to add this time, but that's another story. Certainly you need to know how to target easy to rank topics. Allintitle counts aren't exactly rocket science - and they're still a good indicator.

And aspirational sites like that are a pleasure to work on, rather than the usual gambling/porn/lead gen that money-money-money types go after.

That's a fair observation and interesting talking point

Surely comparisons to the Reddit page are somewhat misleading because, while it may have more photos, and more beautiful ones (I assume it's a crowd-sourced effort; if so, it's hardly surprising it will have a ton of good stuff) it's only ONE page so it's not going to rank for the long tail terms. It just can't. One page can't rank for thousands and thousands of unrelated things.

But if BeautifulWorld, on the other hand, has dedicated pages/sections to beautiful photos of specific things, then it has a chance of ranking for each of those things. Only a chance, mind - I'm not suggesting for one minute it will be easy - but it means that the "universe" of potential traffic that BeautifulWorld MIGHT capture is much much larger than that of the Reddit page.

It's the difference between fishing with a large net in a small river (Reddit - which is likely to show up against searches relating to beautiful photos/images/pictures) and with thousands of hooks in the ocean (BeautifulWorld, which could start to rank on all sorts of much smaller but still meaningful search terms)

There's no shame in having a huge site each of whose pages attracts just a handful of visitors a month. Done right, it's still possible to have that be a success, for a certain value of "success".

When did realistic become miserable :p

Is the site a good enough idea to be bothered to sit and google pictures of animals and then have to rewrite facts about them? sounds laborious

Or would you pay someone to do it? and how much would you have to pay to not just end up with a badly rewritten stolen piece of content from somewhere else

The only way I can see a picture/information site like this doing well is if it already had a lot of good links (so whatever you post ranks) or you could get people to submit content for you

All I'm saying @admin is that I imagine there are more profitable uses of your time

From your reactions here you obviously didn't want or appreciate any (hopefully) constructive criticism, just a pat on the back' sorry I've tried to be helpful beyond "great site!, well done!"

You're a joyless &*%^ aren't you! :) Seriously, it's fine to share your negativity. It's actually made me think about this forum section 'website reviews'. Acorn is another site I acquired rather than built and so the rationale behind some of its parts might always be a bit of a mystery. I had assumed 'website reviews' might have been for design and aesthetics feedback but this thread has turned into one of an evaluation of how worthwhile time and effort is into this particular online real estate. I'm fine with this and I guess any sites posted in this section should be prepared for whatever comes back. In light of recent discussion on how Acorn's remit could be broadened to include online business more generally, it fits well.

However, I didn't position my original post to account for this and did not provide any background to why i'm wasting my time (in your opinion). @Murray I think the only point you have made that I could possibly agree with is the one about 'good use of time' and the 'opportunity cost' of me working on the beautifulworld project vis a vis something more lucrative. I say lucrative and not rewarding because this a rewarding project to do a little bit of work on, it's a 'nice thing'. So if it's a little less financially rewarding than my current star project in the health niche then so be it, it's another online real estate in a totally different sector and I like a bit of variety. You know...perhaps if you wrote a page about a place you are interested in it might cheer you up and burst the bubble of perpetual negativity you seem to be living in at the moment. ;)

So... the background. I saw it for sale on Flippa and loved the name (the sales page is still live if you are interested). I think it's a stellar domain, classy, uplifting, brandable and memorable dot com. I'm happy with what I paid for the site based on the domain alone. I twigged the seller was actually a member here which made me even more keen to make an enquiry. The owner and founder wrote the 100+ location guides over a few years and let the project rest. I'm sorry but its not crap content and the images are not stolen they are owned by us and in more recent articles I took some of the pictures personally! You also stated it would not attract links naturally but it did. It came with some ranking and traffic and as my core business and background is SEO I am working on improving this. I have only had the site 2 months and we manually did a complete migration to wordpress from some bespoke php setup, my wife did most of it. The hard work for us is done. I have a very good writer (who is British). It will take me half an hour to produce a list of the next 10 destinations which he can write over the next month. Some of the locations I am adding have close to 2000 words of well written copy collated from many sources and presented in a unique way. We have started integrating map points with coordinates so e.g. you can get to the exact waterfall you want in Yosemite http://www.beautifulworld.com/north-america/united-states/yosemite-national-park/ (we were there in June). My time input from here will be miniscule.

Why this site? I like to buy sites that are already established to a point and have content that has broad appeal and is EVERGREEN. I will not touch pc game websites, phone hack sites or anything that is fashionable, trendy or has a product lifetime. Health, travel give you locations and diseases/conditions that will never go. If I wasn't a self proclaimed SEO expert with 12 years experience I probably wouldn't have taken some of these sites on but I like an SEO challenge. The long tail opportunities for this site are enormous and thats on top of surprisingly good ranking for terms as big as 'Angel falls' and 'namib desert'. It will be interesting to see what I can achieve after I've incorporated rich snippet schema and attracted stronger social signals.

I don't think the smiley really makes up for the tone of your message, I know running a forum is a thankless task at times, but I'd say that's a pretty negative reply to a contributing member of the forums? Even if you don't like his feedback on your site, you could just agree to disagree & thank him for his time in posting?
Greg, that was 100% joking! Read the rest of my message...i say Im fine with all his comments.

I appreciate the long post and explanation @admin

I would reply to specific points but I've already said what I think in previous posts

Only you can say for sure, but I don't think "it's a 'nice thing' to work on. It seems like it would get tedious pretty quickly. If it was a travel blog of yours I could understand the enjoyment writing about trips, but just paying for content, not so nice.

RE: website reviews forum: this might be a terrible analogy, but a website is like a car to get to a destination, it might be a nice car, but wouldn't you want to be told if you were driving the wrong way.

I've found this to be quite an informative website review.

Good to hear why someone purchased and is further developing a site. And good hear why some people don't think it's a project worth pursuing.

Reasons for/against have been worth a read.

John

Out of interest Murray, what niches are you involved in?

Whatever niche a strong dropped seo domain was in id most likely be happy to develop, so I would say general information sites.
