Hey Edwin.. Thanks for your valuable comments but I was not attributing much value to the domain outside of Denmark.. In fact, I was expecting it to be valuable mainly to Denmark Financial Institutions.. Even though the term mortgages is not used extensively in Denmark I would guess that it should have a recall factor for a sizeable proportion of the population if not a majority.. So my expectation was based on the Denmark end-user targeting but maybe again I am missing something

If you set the Google Keyword planner to show you results of searches in "Denmark" you'll see that only 40 people searched for "mortgages" last month (vs 40,500 in the UK) and it's a "low" competition keyword i.e. unlike in the UK there are very few advertisers bidding on it.

In other words, it's far too obscure for your target market. If you look at the top results on Google for:

mortgages site:.dk

you'll see it's mainly spammy sites pulling in content from other sites and/or the English pages of Danish banks - but their customers will mainly be using the Danish pages where you'll find no mention of the word "mortgage" at all.

The other consideration is that Denmark only has 5.6 million people and only a tiny fraction of that population will be comfortable enough with English to associate "mortgage" with home loans to an extent that it "sounds premium" - which is the criterion you'll need to satisfy before you can persuade a buyer to part with their cash.

Thanks Edwin for your detailed comments.. clarifies a lot actually.

Just one question, with 40,000+ searches per month in UK what would be the approximate value of mortgages.co.uk?

For a domain name that good, the searches are almost irrelevant - just one tasty ingredient in a fabulous recipe.

£250,000+.

Others may disagree :)

I play alot of poker and I definitely wouldn't play on a platform branded as Bad Beat Poker.
I would expect to see this as a Bad Beat Hand version of a site like Poker Hand Replys or maybe a forum / Blog type thing.

Domain Value I would say high £xx - £1xx because it is a very well known poker term. But if developed could be nice cpc come from it

@ Laz.. My initial estimate for it was high £xx - mid £xxx.. so I wasn't that off from your estimate.. But seems like we are in minority here ;)

@ Edwin.. might be overly simplistic approach but if you look ratio wise if the .co.uk version with 40,000+ local monthly searches can command £250,000+ valuation why can't the .dk version with 40 searches command £250-500+ valuation

And looking from another point of view more than 10% of Denmark's population is not of Danish origin.. so wouldn't it be an excellent platform for the Danish financial institutes to cater to non-Danish population? The domain could be used to promote their mortgage products to the non-Danish folks and\or inform them of the latest developments in the mortgage industry in Denmark (in the latter way it might also be of interest to comparison sites or news sites in Denmark)

Lastly a lot of .dk websites already use one-word English domain names for their regular sites (maybe because the one-word Danish names aren't available). For example, business.dk is a fully developed business news site.

Not saying you are wrong or that I am right in expecting the valuation closer to 2000 EUR, but just trying to discuss and understand the nuances that goes into valuing domain names as I am pretty new to this game. And in that regards I once again thank you and others here with years of experience in sharing their wisdom with me and other newbies here.

It doesn't really work that way, you can't just scale the numbers up as some things don't change. You can't pay your web designer and coder 1000th of their normal price just because it has 1000th of the search volume, for example.

And at some point like edwin says the search numbers don't matter so much... mortgages.co.uk is a great domain you could see on the side of a bus or on a TV advert. That adds a huge slice of value. As does the fact it buys you instant credibility (with both end users, and businesses you want to partner with)

You will probably struggle to take top spot for brand name too as badbeat .com is a fairly established site.

I don't think it is a negative name though, you could easily flip it into a positive. For every loser on the end of a bad beat there is a winner.

@Murray Quads 2's vs Quad sixes. Ouch. Pretty tough. I'm guessing you had 2 2 as your hole cards? I wouldn't class that as a bad beat though tbh as the guy had a pocket pair.

Maybe if he had J 6 and hit runner runner sixes for Quads. on a 2 2 6 flop lol.

You can setup private games on PokerStars. What does everyone here play though? I was SnG and MTT player not cash games.

@Panzer.. I agree that I don't see a negative connotation to 'Bad Beat'. In fact the way I remember in actual bad beat hands the winner, the loser both got the largest and second largest share of the jackpot respectively and the others on the table also got a minor share.. so everyone is happy.. Also imho BadBeat dotCom being an established domain probably adds to rather than substracts from the value of the domain name BadBeatPoker dotCo.Uk as it kinda proves the strong association between poker and bad beats.

@Laz.. You have a great idea but I am not familiar with building sites or promoting affiliate links.. Still getting my head around domain valuations and trading.. However if you want to try your hand at it I am willing to sell the domain quite cheap (<£100).. [Or maybe if you or anyone here is willing to guide me around I might give it a shot.. Approx how much do such sites make in a month? Just want to know if there is enough value in it for me to go in a completely different direction.. Although no harm in learning something new.. well am confused already ;) ]

Yea another thing is competition for those poker keywords are extremely high :(

Quads vs Quads is defiantly a bad beat if both hole cards are used. Sites seem to payout with a bad beat of Jacks or higher.

I'm on PokerStars at the moment but I play more live tournaments then internet.
and a bit of cash if I get knocked out of the tourney early :)

If you've zero experience in building or promoting affiliate sites, Poker definitely isn't the niche to start learning in. Its far too competitive, and would require a budget that is going to be so far beyond what a beginner had or was willing to risk.

If you're interested in it then do it in some random, easy niche to begin with.

@Monkey .. Thanks for the advice.. Don't think will trying my luck with building\promoting affiliate sites anytime soon but just curious as to what would be an easy niche in this regard?
