What is your point @gimpydog? You believe a few TV ads will make the general public understand new gTLDs?

How do you expect new domains to Have awareness against the billions, even trillions, spent on promoting .com/.org/.net and .uk?

I don't see any problem with using octopus.energy? They have the .co.uk redirecting to it and for me it is a short, smart example of a gTLD doing exactly what it should.

On the whole I dont find the new gTLDs anything special, but used in the right way why not?

I will bet they are using octopus.energy purely for their TV advertising campaigns to monitor the direct impact on traffic levels as a result of the TV ads.

The downside with lots of domainers, is that they only think like domainers :)

No. Smart investors buy/sell what people actually WANT to use. Those extensions are .uk, .com, .org, and other common ccTLDs.

Your web presence isn't just for you, it's for customers.

No "point", as you put it. I thought it was an appropriate reply to a thread titled...

"Are People & Companies Using New Domains?"

But, for the record, I do happen to believe that a few million quid spent on tv ads will raise awareness of both the brand & the new tld.

As for Octopus Energy, they look to be doing OK, but, of course, we will never know how much better, or worse, they would have done with a different tld.

Thats not a shoddy alexa . Thats equates to what ? about 400,000 hit a month ?

So we are using 1 domain as a good example of advertising? What about the hundreds of other commercials shown in the UK everyday?

New domains are always on the SpamHaus top 10 “Most Abused” TLD list.

https://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/tlds/

You can look-up any extension at the SpamHaus link to the left on the dropdown. For comparison;
  • link = 61.5% bad (score 6.10)
  • click = 73.8% bad (score 7.00)
  • com = 5.8% bad (score 0.73)
  • org = 2.6% bad (score 0.24)
  • uk = 1.7% bad (score 0.14)
  • ca = 0.1% bad (score 0.00)
I get tons of spam from new domain extensions.

So the most common New TLD use, spam.

Why is that ? I dont get why its easy to spam from one extension rather than another. Is it down to launch price ? Isnt that what happened to info domains ? They sold them for a buck a shot so were completely throw away.

Or is there a technical reason ?

It's sad but on my personal servers I already drop anything from .site, .xyz, .bid and a few others. That is because all I've ever had from them are large amounts of spam. That may change in the future but I think abuse of gtlds will destroy credibility in them. There are some I like but would never dream of trading from.

Yes. You might not like the new tlds, I might not like them, but they serve a purpose and it is apparent that some businesses are using them effectively.

Would you rather talk about spam, or the size of Frank Schilling's dick now?

What about the hundreds of other commercials shown in the UK everyday?

That's a completely different question to "are people & companies using new domains?" & I'm not sure it is very relevant, but...

Most UK tv ads are for big & established brands.

http://www.tvadvertsuk.com/

Why would an established brand risk the move from, say, www.kfc.com to www.kentuckyfried.chicken ?

Most new tlds will be used by new brands & start-ups who either missed the party or can't afford to buy the .com or .uk. from people like us :) or businesses who want to be seen as new, cool or edgy or to be creating a buzz. Few of them will have the budget necessary for tv ads.

Many domain investors don't understand the concept of branding & are obsessed with data sets, such as search volumes & the like.

So, are people & companies using new domains?

Yes, they are. For example...

life.church
redmond.company
x.company
brunel.energy
vivere.finance
anthonyboyd.graphics
saga.hamburg
lightspeed.industries
amazon.jobs
att.jobs
orange.jobs
sainsburys.jobs
olympia.london

etc.

Interesting to see from the infographic that the average price is going up. More and more new GTLD operators must be scrabbling around to plug the hole left in their business models by lacklustre takeup.

GTLD's on the whole just make a fortune for a few out of the gullible!

Just like any other private business starting up, all these new TLDs will have a 50 per cent chance of going out of business in two or three years,” Holland says. “That’s going to be somewhat disquieting to people.
