We've auctioned 68 domains over the last month or so and done outbound marketing. We've sold 52 and only two have gone to end users, one for £90 to a tiny cafe in the town (a geographic domain) and the other for just shy of £300 for a keyword domain that's a peach for his business. In the conversation I had post auction with the chap that won the keyword domain, he explained that he got the email and decided to have a bid but wasn't desperate to own it and has no plans to use it.
I used to say that domains are lottery tickets but actually they're more akin to premium bonds where, if you've bought sensibly, you should be able to get your money back but while you own them your number may come up.
