I've been planning to develop Leicestershire.com for a few years but other projects keep getting in the way so I'm considering selling it.

Any ideas on the potential value?

I would hazard a guess at low to mid thousands, but it probably isn't a great time to be selling.

Rgds

very nice domain you have there fox, largest of the east midlands cities and my city of birth ,might be worth contacting the local tourist board and see if they would be interested.

I'd say about 3.5k

These names are better without the shire part.

Good luck with it

Good idea on the tourist board, but I don't imagine they have a particularly big budget.

I lived in Leics for the first 40ish years of my life and have only left relatively recently.

When I first acquired the domain the plan was to turn it into a community portal type site, I offered free webmail accounts, website hosting, forums etc.
I gave up with that idea though because the webmail accounts became very popular with Nigerian spammers and the server's IP ended up on spam blacklists.
I registered lots of other local domains too, for towns and villages, all to be part of the Leicestershire.com network, but I allowed most of them to expire a few years ago.

I also have Leicestershire.biz and Leicester.me.uk but I imagine they're not worth much more than the registration fee.

I think these types of 'geodomains' will go up in value. I would hold on to this one if I were you and do a bit of research on geodomain values.

This is a five figure domain - (perhaps six figure ($) domain in a good market?) With growing interest in geodomains and the slow but steady move of news media from newspapers to local/ hyperlocal websites this is a name with great upside, in my opinion.

According to Namebio.com, Staffordshire.com sold for $24K last year and this name is better, in my opinion.

City and town domains seem to be worth more than county domains. Perhaps because a city/ town name have more 'brand loyalty' and better market recognition. But this is still a great name so make sure you sell it for what its worth. Have you considered renting it out? I'd guess $3K - $5K per month sounds right, at least for the next year or two.

yes a strange one, anyone that lives in leicestershire will tell you that leicester is deprived and mostly housing estates with very little income and the county is very affluent and much sought after (only ravenstone is rough because pendragon lowers the tone:rolleyes:),so i would say leicestershire is a good package.

Anyone who would pay $3K - $5K per month to rent an undeveloped domain with very little traffic would need their head examined. Even if it were worth $24k, which I doubt, the rent multiples don't work out at all - taking an average of your rent figures we get $4k per month which would mean it would cost $48k per year to rent as opposed to $24k to buy. They'll be here soon with the restraints...

The point is that if you know how to squeeze profits out of geodomains, and a lot of people are doing just that, these values look pretty good.

I was not saying offer it for sale for $24K or offer to rent it out for $4K/ month! I am suggesting keep it and rent it out. There IS a difference!

Shire names are great names but you have to understand how to value them.

Places like Wiltshire and Shropshire are well known with the shire part, but places like Leicestershire are better known has Leicester, Ayrshire is better known has Ayr, Nottinghamshire is known as Nottingham.

Some shires need the shire part.

That is my point.

Even the news says for eg, Nottingham instead of Nottinghamshire.

I don't hear people refering to counties that much.

Different opinions i guess

These places are not refered to by a shortened name (without the shire), they are all different places.

Wiltshire & Shropshire are unique in your example because there are no places called wilt and shrop.

Leicestershire is a county. Leicester is a city.

Ayrshire is a county. Ayr is a town.

Nottinghamshire is a county. Nottingham is a city.

Yes, bensd is right.

Also, even though you don't hear people mention shires much many, many, many people know which shire they live in, and the names of nearby shires.

Incidently, if anyone's interested NorthWiltshire.co.uk was available the last time I looked. Don't know if it's useul to somebody.

Cheers,

Steve.

I can't believe there is confusion over the difference between a county and a city.

I know the differenence between a city and county, like i was brought up in Salford ( city ), Greater Manchester ( county )

How many times do you hear people refering to counties ? That's all i'm saying

If you lived in a village or small town and somebody asked where you lived, you'd probably say the county, on the basis they wouldn't have a clue where the former is.
