I think it means more choice for people who don't want to buy a domain on the aftermarket. But they already have plenty of choice anyway. So it's not money lost to domainers. Of course this is a bit more complicated than that but that's the idea.

As for the "gems" to be had, well we know the deal on that don't we.
The top keywords will be reserved and auctioned off by the registries, or scooped up by speculators (that is us, or more exactly the newbies).

The justification for bringing more TLDs to the public so they can have good keywords is a joke. Most of the time it just doesn't happen.
Many domainer newbies are going to get burnt badly in this game. I feel sorry for them.

Thanks for depressing me guys looks like I'm going to be making a website to make back the £60 I just spent on 2 of these turkeys
hmmm turkey.clothing? do you think there's a market for it

dodgy, many of us invested £100s or £1000s on turkeys when we started out, if your only loss is £60 and you learn a lesson, lucky you I say.

Same as any new registration doesn’t matter if its com co.uk , .app .build or any of the new ones on the horizon if you research enough you’ll make a profit but many don’t its just get rich quick/ greed register mountains of crap... Its not exclusive though many do with com and co.uk etc :D

I think a very small percentage do have the potential to be valuable. However, the vast majority are going to be worthless. Those domainers that do profit will be the seasoned professionals that have a "knack" of identifying the right domains. Newbies should be very careful indeed.

Rgds

+1 well said.

Everyone is right and everyone is wrong but whatever you think, you are right.

My thinking is simple. If they are exact term and that term is search heavily, they've got to be worth some money. The rest are rubbish!

For me, it all falls down when you see a premium gTLD that might just be worth a punt for £495.99, put it in your basket and then realise that's also the renewal fee, and the total's pre-populated as £2,480.51 for five years.

Think I'll stick to .uks for £3/year and .coms for £6/year, thanks.

Yes, a lot of the new GTLD have pre registration sunrise periods where you pay a high registration fee (£xxx-£x,xxx) AND whatever that fee is becomes the annual renewal fee as well. Prices tend to drop rapidly over the space of about a week (daily decrements) until the doors open on general availability at normal registration prices.

Means you could have 2 .whocares domains, one renewing at say £15/year and the other at £500/year. Over time, that difference adds up to become massive.

This was after today's 5pm deadline for general availability for .education, albeit not long after, but it's still the case if you try and buy it through GoDaddy now.

I guess they may start dropping the price and renewal fee for the unsold 'premium' names after a while, but it smacks of desperation to me – and would make it a lot less appealing if you were trying to sell such a domain or site in the future (by the way, the renewal fee's a mere £500 a year, unless they decide to hike up their prices by a certain percentage at some stage).

You will see every price inflating tactic known to Man in the new GTLD roll-out. Most of them are never going to see widespread use, so if the registries and registrar partners don't cash in big at launch, they never will. It's not like they can sit back and coast on the millions of renewal fees...

Except for .xyz, which I could see rivalling .com within a year or two. And .wtf. Both are clearly $185,000 well spent.

So come on then, what premium keywords has anyone managed to snag for reg fee? I bought my one and only gTLD so far because I couldn't resist the keyword.

Holidays (dot) onl

Was very cheap only like £9.99 over at DM, my gTLD lottery ticket purchased. :)

The funny thing is that you now have all those strings available and they don't even bother to explain the "intended use" like in the past.
For example, .pro for professionals, .travel for the travel industry or .aero for the aviation industry.
The purpose requirement has dropped.

Now it's up to you to determine the meaning of the TLD (it could be used for domain hacks like sca.red). This is one reason why they are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

So now you can buy the .xyz you have always dreamed about but don't know why.

In fact, under icann, extorsion is now a legitimate business.

Why ? Because i.cann (of worms).
