UncleBob have a gogole of social media influencers, many are Twitter based and most make a killing.
There are market places where Twitter handles are privately sold for decent money too.
I hear what you are saying, but it's not that Twitter is the revenue stream. I've not heard of any success stories with "sponsored tweets", whereas I have, for instance, with Facebook suggested groups / targeted ads.
Sure, someone can get paid £xxxxxx to Tweet something, but they would also get paid that to spread the word via other means. What I mean is the people making money off of Twitter are not making it "because" of what Twitter does, it's just a channel that could be replaced.
And I had kind of assumed that 75% of people stopped using Twitter when the guardian of it, Stephen Fry, quit?
