Anyone Developing at the moment?

I still can't believe you've not changed the design of that site lol!, i don't like to sound all negative but it looks like my first affiliate site I made when I was 15 (11 years ago) does it actually get any traffic?

Traffic is low, and traffic is the problem. I do have a plan and I will keep persevering with it. The site is making some sales. I know what is working and will be doing more of that.

I'm not changing the design because I'm getting old and don't have the energy I used to have!!! (We've been over the "design" issue quite a few times here.) I am slowly building traffic to this site whilst working on other things.

Also, if anyone would like to link to LowPrices.co.uk then please feel free to do so!!!

Hi Guys

Any of you developing sites at the moment? if so any examples of what you have been doing?

I am going to try and get one website developed a week

Prefer not to share all my 'money' niches/targets but I've got my brother working on FlyingLessons.co.uk. Long way to go yet but he's doing really well, esp. for his first site, with pretty minimal guidance really.

Anything you can build in a week can be copied in a week, I'd say you're much better off focusing on 4 or 5 big content-rich sites with regular updates than 50 minisites - that approach doesn't cut it any more.

What are you monetising this with?

Affiliate commissions and adsense, but I've just moved adsense into a more prominent position to see if that increases earnings, but to be honest, I'm still delaying the inevitable, which is possibly moving on when the hosting renewal is due in July.

When you say "the site is making some sales". Do you mean actual visitors to the site are clicking through to make purchases? Or are these sales coming from spamming affiliate links on twitter? (Using the lowprices domain to mask the url).

Last week purely for fun as I had a couple hours free I set myself 2 hours to buy a domain, add a site, add some content and get it live, the result was Carzaa as you'll see I've not added anything since the day it went live. Few posts on a few sites and it's had around 1000 uniques so far. Note it's not setup to make money, made it purely from an interest hobby point of view.

Visitors to the site are making purchases.

Also, I don't agree that I am "spamming" Twitter. I am increasing my "presence" on Twitter.

... and I have also made some sales from Twitter, although that is very low conversion rates, but sales nevertheless.

I like it, template I assume? Btw, you are driving a "Gold GTI" ;)

Saving up for a Cayman S...I use to have a Cayman R (only 100 made), stunning machine, loved it.

Haha oops obvs was meant to say Golf, it's definitely not gold, it's as white as snow (when it's clean) Yeh love the new Cayman.

Yes template bit of modification. Glad you like, just need to set it up so I have 5 new posts a day

Where did your traffic come from so quickly?

It perhaps comes across as a bit spammy as right now your recent tweets were motorbike helmets, screwfix, flights to Oz, mobile phones, vaccumm cleaners, womens clothes...

Increasing your presence in this manner likely isn't going to work, as who is your ideal shopper? Just say for example I'm into motorbikes and liked that one... I'm not likely to want my twitter feed jammed up with random woman stuff like cleaning products or dresses.

I guess the proof is in the numbers - 5000 tweets in, under 500 followers yet following 4 times that. Perhaps time for a twitter rethink?

This is a fair point and one I agree with. However, I am making sales on Twitter, and @lowpricesuk is being used as a "power" account, where I just Tweet everything under the sun. I agree people won't be that keen to follow it, and don't expect them to, but actually the follower number is gradually ticking up. I use hashtags to increase Tweet visibility. I am learning all the time, and one of my Tweets got over 16,000 impressions. I am also learning what people are interested in, testing offers if you like.

I have also started niche Twitter accounts which are segmented, so I only Tweet certain products so I don't lose followers.

Whilst I agree with what you are saying, there is method behind my seemingly unsophisticated tactics. Remember that @lowpricesuk is actually making me sales, and that's the important thing for me! What I have realised is that if I want to be "viable" as an affiliate, I actually need to up my activity maybe 100 fold.

Thanks and rgds

Accelerator, you're obviously a very driven and motivated person with a fantastic work ethic. If you put all that energy into a more realistic project you'll see far more returns than you ever will with Lowprices.co.uk.

Thanks. A more realistic project such as??

I 3 sites I rent out and each month I have a total income of £260 (£3,120 per year)

I have a Fresh Store Builder up and running the last 2 weeks, a few sales already (Will be doing this more often)

I have a jobs board up and running

I have a property portal up and running that generates me a fair bit of business.

So all going in the right direction.

Also interesting to hear peoples views on design and that it doesn't matter too much. Does the design of a site not effect your opinion of the site? There's a few who have definite views on the look of Accelerators site so what's the tipping point where aesthetics kill it?

Its absolute madness not to have your site looking good. Its what a couple of thousand £ as a one off cost.

  • It'll increase conversion rates
  • It'll assist link building
  • It'll give you credibility outside of conversions (dealing with other webmasters or trying to create relationships etc)
  • it'll affect bounce rates, which will in turn affect rankings
  • it'll affect social media shares, which will in turn affect all of the above

I realise Accelerator is saying you don't need to do it; but on the other hand he's also telling you his own site has effectively failed. If it was working for him then fair enough but it seems a bit bizarre to do something, it doesn't work, then recommend it to everyone else

I agree but a great design with shit content is maybe worse? They obviously go hand in hand but I think people are more forgiving of poor design than poor content, craigslist being a classic example of that?

I don't know which is worse, it'd depend what you're doing I suppose. If you're processing payday leads I'd rather have the pretty design as they won't read the content anyway. If you're giving out medical advice then I'd rather have the high quality content on a standard WP install.

Its not like you need to choose one or the other though. And if you are in a position where you really do need to choose decent content or decent design then your project is horrifically underfunded and certain failure is coming anyway.

I wouldn't really look too much into what eBay, craigslist, google, Facebook and so on are doing, unless you're just looking for ideas to borrow to build into your project. They can do stuff you can't do with no ill effects. Key word stuffing, landing pages with spun content, auto generated sections, etc etc. They already have the users and all the brand signals, they're immune.
