AirportParking.UK - £7,500 ($9,300)

Do they have too have .uk as their primary site or will a .uk acknowledgment do like a redirect ? The issue with news sites is the amount of content involved and people linking to it. Can we mix some retail in there ? like argos pcworld etc

Yes, it has to be the primary site - that's your whole argument. By all means suggest some retail additions :)

This was purely down to the monetisation potential of the name, the size and value of the market, and a product which is virtually always bought online; it has nothing to do with it being a .uk

3d level (.org.uk .me .uk .co.uk .ltd.uk) down by 166,444

second level (.UK) up by 98,508

https://www.nominet.uk/news/reports-statistics/uk-register-statistics-2016/

One way of interpreting those stats is that Nominet has shrunk the UK namespace by close to 70,000 domains in a year by messing people around with .uk.

Projecting the growth/shrinkage forward at the current pace with a bit of Excel fiddling, the two extensions will reach parity by 2054 with about 4,000,000 domains in .co.uk and the same in .uk.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think I'll be past caring by then!

(This is just a bit of fun to show you can make stats say anything;))

You think the .co.uk drops are mainly from investors @Edwin? Will it accelerate over the next 2 years?

97.3 % of all stats are made up. Fact.

There are many factors involved. Growth and decline will not be linear year on year. I think parity will happen much sooner if you are going by registrations, I'd expect a giant surge over the next 2 years as and when it gets promoted and FOMO'd

At least partly, yes. I don't see why it won't accelerate, especially when we get to within 1 renewal period of the .uk register-or-not decision day.

I'm guessing also that the price rise will have caused some smaller businesses to wonder if they need to keep renewing old non-core domains (like the last-but-two version of the little brochure site, or the one that was used for the Christmas bus shelter poster campaign that wasn't repeated)

Yes, I'd imagine there's going to be a huge surge soon. I'm guessing lots of domain owners haven't registered their corresponding .uk yet.

I haven't and I plan to do it much nearer the cut-off date.

On the flip side, I'm sure there will be plenty of domain owners who don't register the corresponding .uk, although I'm guessing there will be plenty of companies that go round mopping them up and then selling them back to the .co.uk owners!

Probably won't be parity in the next couple of years, but the gap is going to close up quite substantially imho.

This is probably what most people are doing.

I wonder if this was Nominet's grand plan to flush out domain investors from the .UK space? :)

No Nominet's grand plan was simply to make more money for the top registrars and themselves. Mission accomplished. The next thing that will come is allowing domain registrars to keep domains past expiry. That will make major registrars a fortune. Lets hope none of the nominet board (past or present) have any links with hosteurope, godaddy etc because that could be construed as a conflict of interest and abuse of a monopoly *cough*.

Yes, it happens in .com all the time and has done so for years and years.

That's one of the many hurdles facing .com drop catchers: the uncertainty over whether a particular domain will ever actually drop, or just get shunted internally into the registrar's portfolio.

Surely the current registrant would still have the option to intentionally delete the domain name if they so desired, rather than let the registrar get it. Otherwise it would mean that Nominet would have to withdraw that current right!

A valid reason for terminating a contract includes unsatisfactory performance of the whole or part of the contract by the other party (the registrar), Nominet would need to have an arbitration facility if the registrar tried to argue for the domain name under those circumstances, surely.

We're only talking about something they *could* do in the future. For now there's no evidence of it happening but nominet have shown in the past that they never do anything that benefits the consumer - only themselves and large registrars.

Most decisions by registries are for the benefit of themselves and registrars.

I know its an "old thread", just going through the sold forum...

Isn't Nominet something we can all participate in, voting on major changes... its a members club in many ways after all... maybe I'm wrong here...

As long as we're all making money domaining, how much do we really care about the .co.uk vs .uk debate?

Personally I'm in the ".uk is an opportunity camp", I think the trend will move towards .uk being the adopted norm. Its not going to happen over night, public consciousness will take a long time to change. Gov.uk are helping the permeation of ".uk" in peoples minds IMO. I guess thats why Nominet set the RoR dooms date so far in the future.

.uk brings us inline with the rest of the world, .us, .nl, .de, .es etc... move with the times, roll with the punches, see the opportunity, make money, look after your family, have a happy life... give a crap about much else?

Just my two pence... not worth much I'm sure :)
