If not you could try contacting nominet, they will have the old records

I have now replied to the email with a link to the DRS section of nominet.
The ball is now in his court. I'll reconsider my next move if he should reply which I think unlikely..

Thanks for all comments

He mentions Dollars as he is based in Australia. It is, (was) some kind of fanzine based site with a heavy emphasis on a new movie being made. "Eragon"

Googles cash is still there;

I feel for him as he has put a lot of work into it. Traffic will die very quickly in its current state.

Sell for £100. He can't quibble over that and you have just made 25% of your DAC fee back on your first catch.

Agreed. It's pretty tough on him. Other option is to get him to contact the registrar that screwed up to contact you to buy it back as goodwill

Whilst I do have some sympathy for him, it seems that he did have the opportunity to renew and chose not to.

I do now feel that he is genuine as he has replied saying that

"...During the suspension process, my company told me i could pay $80 to get it back. That was absolutely rediculous...."

When he says $80 I suspect he means the £80 nominet fee. I'm not sure of exchange rate but if he thought $80 was too much I can't see him paying £100+ transfer fees. I doubt if he would even pay the transfer fee as that can't be too far off $80. He obviously did have the option of renewing and chose not to.

I'm still considering my options though, so any further thoughts appreciated.

I would suggest letting him have the name back (he pays xfer fees etc) and come to some arrangement with a link on his site or something.

Agreed, it's not like you're taking on BT, pricewaterhouse or someone fun.

I had the same idea myself before I saw this post. I think that probably is an amicable solution, but I would need some confirmation that he was the genuine owner, although I am inclined now to believe him.
