The Nominet 2008 PAB election has been called:
http://www.nic.uk/news/latest/?contentId=4757

This year it is more open than ever before with 4 places available.

Therefore I have decided to hold the Primary Acorn Ballot (PAB).....

Ed Russell (www.namedrive.com)
Someone from (www.iwf.org.uk)
An internet expert (www.ox.ac.uk)
An IP lawyer (www.ipkitten.blogspot.com)
Someone from (www.which.co.uk)
Someone from (www.Google.co.uk or www.Yahoo.co.uk)

Please also post what you think will be the main policy issues for 2008/2009.

N.B. the PAB doesn't have anything to do with 'operational' issues like setting prices or DAC limits. The PAB just decides mainly general policy statements to advise the Nominet board.

I think the main policy issues for 2008/2009 will be:

Registrar Parking Pages and the DRS:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jan/31/myspace.digitalmedia

Lock states:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registrar-Lock

.ltd.uk rules and the '@' sign:

Two letter domains:

Waiting Lists:

Trust in the internet:

Raising Industry Standards:

Online Transfers (FREE) using EPP auth codes:

If anyone needs any help, advice, a seconder or a proposer let me know.

Finally please be NICE and don't post anything derogatory :)

Would be my shortlist either for comic value or seriousness, however I doubt any will end up on it nor put themselves forward as it is a fair amount of time.

As for me, 08/09, it might well be practical! :)

good point

I think rob made a good point here.....time (effort) for relevant gratification is poor....Paullas headbanging logo comes to mind

More gratification is made in business not politics

I take it that rules Lee out from Rob's comedy cabinet!

I don't think that would be a good idea, he'd most likely chin the Chairman

What about me. I'm not on your list? Actually I vote for lee owen.

Sorry hammer. Please PM me your name and I'll add you to the list - that goes for anyone else i've missed. If anyone wants taking off please PM/email me and I will.

I agree the PAB takes up a lot of my time and you need a lot of patience/determination. Just getting to Kings Cross can be a problem in itself.....especially if your in Romania :D

At least now I work for Pipex they let me go in company time....

Was toying with the idea of standing for the PAB myself, but as you say requires a lot of time and committment. If you are running a small business, this can be tricky.

I would go for it Paul - will only be four meetings after the election:

The meeting dates for 2008 are:-

Wednesday 9 January
Wednesday 12 March
Wednesday 14 May
Wednesday 2 July
Wednesday 10 September
Wednesday 12 November

Of course Andrew will get my vote - hard to pick out others from the list as I know most of them and wouldn't want to narrow them down. Anyone sympathetic to dropcatching would get my vote anyway. Fair few there :)

Being first is never wrong

Now Mr Droppings..

I have never known anyone to be penalised for being first to something so devising a way to win your race is not abusive. If Nominet set rules for the race then I suppose you cannot use banned enhancement products but Nominet remain impartial so such rules would have to pass the PAB (and members) first.

Dropcatching can turn abusive if you target names that belong unequivocally to someone else but such names are rare in number.

With Mr Droppings on my side maybe I could find a way to become a PAB member....he has great computer skills and could bombard the voting system for me....Mr Droppings should I stand for election?

Doesn't work like that on the PAB....

First off you have to declare your interest in the topic:

Gordon Dick declared that he had in the past knowingly registered a very small number of domains shortly after they had expired for clients, but did not use the DAC or any automated process to monitor the drops. Andrew Bennett and Michael Toth also declared that they had registered domains soon after they had been cancelled. None were actively doing this at present.

Then if you try and push a certain view on something, someone (if not many) will always disagree with you.
