Reoffending rates at just 16%, compared to the UK's rate of around 70%.

Maybe we need to get over our obsession with punishing offenders, and actually see what works in making sure people don't reoffend? It goes against one's natural instinct, but if you look at the bigger picture, this kind of thing might be something worth considering?

Comparing us to Norway is not an option.

But why not go the whole hog and give each offender an amount of money say £1,000,000 for an armed bank robber, then we would not need to imprison them ( saving £500,000 over a 10 year term )and they would not need to re-offend because they are set up for life. Voila !

Oh hang on, what would deter crime ?

Back to the drawing board.

Have you sat with your grandmother at the side of her hospital bed, holding her hand while she cries after being beaten black and blue by a 29 year old burgler that she caught rumaging through her house?
Sat with her in court while again she cried giving testimony
Watching the defendant smirking at other witnesses, laughing and joking with his mates in the public gallery?
Then seeing him sentenced to 2yrs imprisonment and getting out after 10 months and released into the same community where my gran lived.
I'm really pleased she passed away before he was released.

It depends whether you're motivated by results or revenge. If the Norwegian system results in fewer offences, then they're doing something right.

It seems the days are long gone when the feelings of the victims were taken into consideration.

I'd prefer to have fewer victims. If that's what the Norwegian system achieves then they're doing something right.

You cannot compare a norwegian system to that which we have in the UK.
Norway has a population of 5 million and small rural countries have a greater community spirit and have not degenerated into the types of communities that exist in the UK & America.
Small is always easier to manage than big.

This particular prison is island-based, has only 110 inmates and a warden/prisoner ratio of 1:2, and cost $252m to build. Hardly scaleable and certainly not affordable...shudder to guess what the cost per inmate must be to the Norwegian Govt when you add in the running costs for this institute.
