123-reg saving Credit card details the F@#*ers PART 2

But will be there again if you reg or renew another domain in time! reg another and see LOL

Well to be fair mate if someone reg's with them again knowing the way they operate then the individual can't complain imo.

Not had a call from 123-reg yet so called support and explained the situ and was told ....

"it's an option you select to agree to use your card details for any renewals that may come up in the future"

I have never ticked a box or agreed to anything when buying a domain to say use my card for future renewals. Have you Boxerdog?

Anyways couldn't speak to any team leaders or management about the issue as I do think thats the only way to put it to bed but was advised to write a letter and post it FAO Management !!! WTF

There's one way to avoid this. I regged some domains yesterday with 123-reg, and paid via Paypal. No card details stored!

Though in other news, I didn't get a bulk domain discount even though it's clearly advertised on their site... so now I'm wrestling with Support too!

Mike.

@ Miked, although you can hand reg names and pay with PayPal at 123, if you want to renew names at any point, you have to pay with a credit card, they don't allow renewals by PayPal

Oh, thanks for the heads-up Systreg. I have some renewals due. back to the drawing board...

Did you buy 30 domains exactly by any chance? I had the same problem recently with them.

There's a lot of this about - you can't get out of a credit card renewal unless the charging company removes the debit -and I don't know why -

But be careful with Paypal, too. I did a cheap reg with a US company recently and they popped a future fee debit onto the Paypal account!

Yes, I can remove it within Paypal, but be aware that it can happen ...

From 123-reg's perspective, they would have more problems if they didn't auto-renew for their customers than by doing it and upsetting a few people who thought they would let their domains expire.

It's always worth checking a registrar's policy on this as different ones require different procedures. Not every process is suited to everyone's way of working - I suppose what 123-reg are catering for is casual website/domain owners; if they go on holiday for a couple of weeks, they don't want to get back to find their site has been down for a long time because they require a manual renewal.

Of course, the best option is to give everyone the choice of auto-renewing or not auto-renewing individual domains with a checkbox option. 123-reg aren't particularly cheap these days so you shouldn't really have a problem finding a registrar that has a panel that has the features you require and also maybe slightly cheaper. :)

If you want to repeat renewals or payments like in Car Insurance, Loan Payments, etc they take direct Debit which is agreed on by you.

Your local take away or domain registar takes an order for a 12" and chips or a domain name can't think I'll keep his card details (without consent) and just use them next time he orders a Kebab or a for a domain that wants renewing!

I like to know the legal side to this as I haven't agreed, ticked any boxes signed any forms to say use my card for any purpose to do with my account.

So Boxerdog when you have a renew coming up, they will be renewed for you like it or not!

It's called 'continuous card authority' and is used for repeat transactions/subscriptions. E.g. your mobile phone bill is probably paid for with continuous card authority, if you don't use direct debit.

Your card details aren't actually stored in their entirety (this is against pretty much every card processing regulation around) but a special code that allows a repeat transaction from the same merchant.

I recently noticed the same when I checked my bank balance! I wonder how much they have made from this...?

If your that pissed of create an anti 123-reg site, 123regsucks.co.uk and gather all the rst of the haters and rank for 123 reg :)

I contacted 123 when my card details were on file after I had removed them , and they were removed ,noticed that when you buy or renew domains there is small print saying card details being saved. after paying ,check no details are being kept and if so contact them via their help site ,so you have record of it.

As I said in another thread, I applied for another tag for my domainservices.co.uk site.

When I was applying Nominet wanted to know everything about my business models including how I rebilled people, how they would know what charges were coming and how they could stop them amongst other questions.

If the business models don't add up, Nom will not allow the tag. Hoefully they will make it apply to existing tags and members like 123-reg and 1&1 because I feel it is designed to stop these practices and imo they have an eye on them now.

Update for you guys.

I tried to administer my 123-reg domains today but was greeted with a screen saying I MUST enter my credit card details before accessing any further.
Not happy, as I'm paid up, and I can't even get into the support screen to complain! Hence finding these posts via google.

I also have a client site on 123-reg and needed to access their site to administer it so have to resolve this.
So I entered my own CC details and came across the attached screen.
This is where they get you to sign away your rights gents.

123-reg bought Supanames a couple of months ago and I was a Supanames customer as was my client - so I think they may have lost all our CC details as we have no renewals pending. Either that or they are making everyone update their details so they can get you to click on this screen.

Cheers

There is a cross exit box in the top right so that you are not forced to enter payment details, you are able to move ahead and use the services and tools without entering payment details.

Thanks for being diplomatic mate.

I obviously should have gone to Specsavers ...

cheers

I have just put this up because of the same problem, not quite as good as a dedicated website but it will do the job for now.

http://www.complaints-about.com/123-reg.php
From the website:
The effect is that you either pay for a domain name or you tell them it should expire, which will then give them the chance to analyse the domain name and if it has any web value they will register it for themselves to sell on.
Do you have any proof of this?

Can't remember where I read this specifically, I haven't collected any evidence myself(is that what you meant) but if you do a search you should find some info about domain registration companies doing this generally(so not just 123) and how it is a conflict of interest.

You should find articles showing that the sale of seemingly expired domain names are not being allowed to go back on the open market but the good ones are being 'skimmed' and then traded by domain registration companies possibly at auction through third parties.

The trading of these is a multi million dollar business.

It's a good way to make money for a registration company and perfectly legal as far as I can tell.

Usually a domain has a few weeks to expire even if it has not been paid for at the registration company this gives some time to the owner.

If you are made to click a button to say 'Allow the domain to expire' possibly you are giving the registration company the ability to take over that domain. If it's a good domain name it might then go to auction as soon as is possible.
I'm pretty sure that a large company has the ability to make this happen to increase their profitability.
