hi,

im just wondering what your opionion is on putting www. in front to of domain when advertsing them on a car or window sticker: e.g. like below:

example_sticker.jpg

My gut says its a bit old school and clunky (and not even needed)

doing some research the following:

Rightmove.co.uk
loans.co.uk
paddypower.co.uk
primelocation.co.uk
google.co.uk
aol.co.uk
ebay.co.uk
glasgow.com
jersey.com
scotland.com/
torquay.com

None of these use www. on logo

However a friend of mine (who's 45) and a but old school thinks someple people won't 'get it' that its website etc..

your thoughts appreciated.

I remember the BBC dropping it a few years ago, seems standard practice to advertise and mention your site without the www today and moving forward - as long as you deal with any requests to www or non www in an seo friendly manner I would advertise 'domain.co.uk'

Just look at the Confused.com and ComparetheMarket.com adverts on TV.
Nothing about www. in them.

I dare say any car stickers would be the same. Besides you don't need to enter www. on most sites to access the website.

It makes me laugh when people on the TV ads read out w.w.w old hat these days - especially when most sites redirect BBC - Homepage to BBC - Homepage etc.

Certainly if it's a brand they drop the www.

It was the old days, just in case maybe people don't know the address refers to the internet, and it's just a thing every one did and even I then thought you need a www in order to open a webpage.

now days since more people is aware of how it acutally works, promoting the web name is better looking without www

Target audience?

Perhaps depends on your target audience? If they're young and net-savvy, drop the www - but if they're older keep it?

(gross generalisations, but you get the idea?)

Cheers, Jon

I have no idea why, but I always type in the www.
When was the last time a site didn't resolve without it?

The purpose is for A records.

www. point to the site
ftp. point to a ftp login
mail. point to webmail

And so on.

An A record * = 123.123.123.123 means if anything is put before the domain it resolves to that I.P. usually the main site.

fred.domainname.co.uk

It still works

An A record @ = 123.123.123.123 means if nothing is put before the domain name then it resolves to that I.P. again usually the main web site.

Most hosting companies usually have them set in place some don't!

Sorry if you know it all but for those who didn't ;)

Definitly no www. these days it's just really dying out !!!

The only people who just might get confused are oaps on a free internet course who will soon learn anyway.

If people don't realise it's a web address then they're probabl no good on a computer anyway and don't even own a pc ?

Say no to www.

My small handfull of sites work without www.
