Hi all

In a bit of a dilemma as to which would be the better domain to grab for a site that I plan to develop...

Am I better with word1-word2-word3.com or word1word2word3.net ? ...bearing in mind that... there is often confusion as to whether word2word3 together is actually one word or two. It's definitely not hyphenated, but you see it written with and without a space (although I think the correct version is as one word). I hope this is all making sense!

(needless to say word1word2word3.com and .co.uk are both taken, as are a variety of other variations)

Thanks.

It probably doesn't make much difference. Buy as many permutations as you can afford including word1-word2word3 dot whatever to deny them to your competition. Pick the domain you like best and point the others to it.

In the end what you put on the site is as important, and probably more important than the domain. Do not delay starting work on a site by worrying about which is best out of this bunch of sub prime domains.

Thanks, RSK...

By the way, I was curious about the sites in your sig so took a random look at them. I looked at the rotary shaver one, and then searched to see how it performed in Google.

You might like to tweak your title tag! ;)

"Rotary Shaver - Your guide to Chess Sets Chess-Set.org.uk"

Lol, quality.

The only thing I'd say about your OP is that you should check the exact match of the 2/3 word phrase and pick the version of the domain that matches the highest search volume version of the phrase, eg check

[Worda Wordb Wordc] versus
[Worda Wordbwordc]

As an example, check the search volume for [Tabletop Freezer] versus [Table Top Freezer], if this was the name then where the hyphens were might make a difference.

Also, from my perpective, GTLDs are far harder to rank for UK visitors than UK names.

Best of luck

Ty

Thank you... for

word1 word2 word3 - 6,600 monthly global searches (I don't know if that's all that high, but I think I could rank top with a little work and it's a term that ought to generate sales)

word1 word2word3 - just 170 monthly global searches (which really surprises me)

I suppose that would imply that word1-word2-word3.com isn't perhaps so critical as word2 and word3 are better not separated?

tbh 6600 global is low and 170 global unless branding this domain then I wouldn't even bother.

Check on keyword you have put settings to exact and not broad ?

Arggh! Thats the last time I buy a site off eBay!;)

Seriously, though, thanks for pointing that out! I wasn't even drunk when I coded it.

Small search volumes are not necessarily a problem if you can get the site to rank well.

No worries.

Yes, this is what I'm thinking. I think I could very easily get a top 5 ranking and, with time, the number 1 spot. It ties in very neatly with another venture I run, and it's also something that I think will probably have a reasonably high sales to search ratio.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone... I ended up grabbing both domains in the end.
