ID checks have long been required by Nominet to ensure the operation of .UK remains safe and secure – and our members’ and customers’ interests are protected, but we are now strengthening this process with the introduction of an ID verification service from Mitek.
We have many processes that require ID checks – these include the onboarding of new members and registrars, as well as 2FA reset requests, applications for .sch.uk domains and non-member zone file applications. Against a rising national backdrop of crimes being undertaken with counterfeit ID and fake documents, the adoption of this new technology was an important step to take.
To confirm, this ID verification process is not being rolled out for any new processes, it’s only replacing the current mechanism for verifying someone’s identity. Mitek is an identification verification provider used by financial institutions, payment companies and businesses operating in highly regulated markets. Mitek can verify people quickly and securely through their digital footprint, ID documentation and facial biometrics, and the process enables you to verify your identity through a series of checks quickly and securely.
If required, we will invite you to confirm your ID via Mitek and you will be guided through a step-by-step process. You will need to take a live picture, like a passport photo and you will also be required to upload supporting documentation to help confirm your identity, such as photo ID and proof of address.
This is a small but necessary change to our customer service processes, and we hope it will improve the experience of needing to verify your ID before we undertake important requests which require a higher level of security.
