An initiative to boost education and inclusion in the Oldham area, has received a £10,000 funding boost, thanks to Nominet member, Plum Communications.
Hulme Grammar has created an outreach partnership programme with other local schools, businesses and community groups.
Nominet member Peter Savic, Director at Plum Communications, nominated Hulme Grammar School (based in Oldham) for funding through our Members’ GiveHub in July 2024.
Thanks to Peter’s GiveHub application, we’re delighted to have donated £10,000 in funding to help Hulme Grammar School, working in partnership with Oldham Athletic FC, provide digital access, education and opportunities to young people in the local community.
Almost 40% of residents in Oldham, Greater Manchester experience some form of digital exclusion. What’s more, less than half of children in state-funded schools in Oldham are meeting the expected standard for writing. And less than two-thirds of pupils are meeting attainment levels for reading and mathematics.
Our funding will help children who are hard to reach and have limited or no digital access benefit from alternative education provisions and extra-curricular activities to enhance their learning. This includes mentorship programmes, guest lectures, and collaborative projects.
Using sport as a vehicle, the partnership also enables Hulme Grammar to engage a network of 110 primary schools and 12 secondary schools in Oldham and invite them to large events at the stadium. This includes activities for the whole family to increase reach and participation.
Hulme Grammar is committed to leveraging its resources and expertise to enrich the broader educational ecosystem in Oldham, whether that’s through mentorship programmes, guest lectures, or collaborative projects.
The outreach partnership programme aims to reach at least 1,000 children and young people during the first year through STEM careers fairs, a satellite classroom at Oldham Athletic FC, and hackathon competitions at Hulme Grammar School.
The programme also includes a variety of outreach events at key intervals throughout the year, for example during Manchester Science Festival and British Science Week.
“We’re thrilled to have received funding from Nominet GiveHub towards our outreach partnership programme. Almost 40% of residents in Oldham experience some form of digital exclusion. Through a partnership with Oldham Athletic FC, Hulme Grammar will engage with local schools, businesses, and community groups. This funding is going to help us purchase much needed equipment and give us the resources to engage and inspire young people in our community. Nominet have been incredibly supportive throughout the application process and their public benefit pillars align directly with our project aims.”
– Marc Hornby, Director of Development & Public Benefit at Hulme Grammar and Martin Vose, Head of Community at Oldham Athletic Community Trust
Finally, the engagement programme seeks to promote internet safety among children and young people. This includes tackling hate crime in Oldham, which often takes place online.
In the last four years, there have been over 3,500 reports of hate crime in Oldham targeting those in marginalised communities.
By engaging children and young people through education, the partnership hopes to tackle hate crime before it starts – making a positive difference to people’s lives in Greater Manchester and beyond.
As a Nominet member, you can apply for up to £10,000 per financial year on behalf of an eligible organisation of your choice, for projects that align with our commitment to making the world more connected, inclusive and secure.
A total fund of £50,000 is available every month. You’ll need a Member Hub account to apply.
The GiveHub panel (made up of up to seven volunteers from the membership) review applications monthly with support from the Membership Engagement team.
