I sold a domain name last year - for £40 if I remember correctly not very much I know..

The buyer requested that we complete transfer a little later and he'd get in touch - he never did and I can't find his contact details.

The domain is going to be deleted in 3/4 days - do I let it drop or renew it?

renew and review it again next year.

Drop it, your responsibility for renewals ended when the buyer paid their money.

I agree with that, if they couldnt be bothered to get back to you to complete the transfer thats his luck out of the window. Why waste your money renewing it only to find your self in the same situation in a years time.

I agree with that. You've got the money, and even £40 covers a lot of years' worth of renewals so I don't think a one year extension is outrageous.

That gives you time to find the buyer's contact details again, or reach out to them another way e.g. via LinkedIn. Failing that, you could redirect the domain to a page telling the buyer to get in touch with YOU to complete the transfer (and warning that you won't renew it again past 2015).

+1

What's your time worth?
Lets say £20 per hour and you spend an hour on this and you are no further forward so you then renew.

The domain has now cost you £25 from a £40 sale???

Why should he use his money to renew a domain that no longer belongs to him?

He could end up swamped with any tom dick or harry claiming to be the person who's bought the domain.

ahh - after a long search of an archive, I found the email and he's responded...

Problem solved I guess.

It does still belong to him.
It must have some value, otherwise it would not have been sold for £40, and if the guy eventually claims the name he will settle up on additional costs and you never know he may deal with him again knowing him to be a good egg.

Being swamped by people interested in a domain is an added bonus.

Would love to know what his reason was, once you've sorted it of course.

Yes that would be an added bonus on a domain thats for sale but not the case here though is it? The domain has already sold so been swamped with emails from people claiming to be the buyer wouldnt be a good thing

You are hardly going to get swamped by fraudulent claims on a £40 domain that had questionable renewal value, let's stay realistic.

How can it belong to him when someone has bought it? Being the registrant is not the same as being the owner. If I'm wrong then I presume that it's acceptable for Posh to sell the name if he gets an offer that's higher than £40 and just refund the original buyer?

The rest of your post is a series of assumptions all of which involve Tony spending money in the hope he might get it back but with no guarantee that will happen.

Different people view things differently.
It appears I don't see it as you do.
