He argued that Britain had 'helped to clear the European continent of fascism' and had remained 'resolute' throughout the Second World War.

'Britain is an island that helped to abolish slavery, that has invented most of the things worth inventing, including every sport currently played around the world, that still today is responsible for art, literature and music that delights the entire world.

'Britain may be a small island, but I would challenge anyone to find a country with a prouder history, a bigger heart or greater resilience'

'We are very proud of everything we do as a small island - a small island that has the sixth-largest economy, the fourth best-funded military, some of the most effective diplomats, the proudest history, one of the best records for art and literature and contribution to philosophy and world civilisation.'

Cameron is an idiot. He calls for a parliamentary vote BEFORE evidence is formally presented, and expects MPs to give more military action the nod. What a fool he now looks.

Might be method in the madness.

Anyway, a very touching response for British pride.

I agree with the second sentence, but the first one is ridiculous.

'Britain is an island that helped to abolish slavery'

And start it, and continue it, and then protest against abolishing it for a hell of a long time. And destroy plenty of other nations and hundreds of thousands of lives in the meantime.

'that has invented most of the things worth inventing, including every sport currently played around the world'

Surely the web is a much more important British mention than every sport in the world, especially as we can't play many of them very well ;)

'that still today is responsible for art, literature and music that delights the entire world.'

Maybe I'm just ignorant but I can't even think of a major contemporary British artist.

On the music front, not sure One Direction really counts.

Not a David Cameron fan but we are great at Art and Music

British Artists

Francis Bacon
David Hockney
Damien Hirst
Banksy

Music
Pink Floyd
Beatles
Elton John

List could go on and on

Bowie, Stones, Who, so many more. Did someone really suggest they were unable to come up with anyone other than one direction?!

Guess I'm showing my age - I wasn't born when they were in their prime, so they aren't contemporary to me! ;)

Going to say something controversial here..

I don't think I believe in national pride.

I had no hand in any of the achievements listed above, only being born on the same island as these people & that wasn't because of any choice I made..

You shouldn't have to take pride in other peoples achievements, you should be doing something to take pride in your own.

I think that is one of the biggest problems is Britain for me is 99.9% of people do nothing themselves personally to draw pride from.

Whether it be something like just treating other people with respect, kindness and compassion on to bigger things.

It was a shrewd move IMO. He knew they would lose, but was publicly seen to do the right thing and ASK for "public opinion" first. Opposite to the Blair approach. The world has followed his approach.

National Pride is about being part of something bigger or 'collective'. Same is said of supporting a football team or the hourdes of people rushing on to Facebook / Twitter / Forums / Acorn Domains each day :)

How many football fans talk about the team they support as if they were wearing the number 10 shirt ('we' won the game, 'we' are 2nd in the league, 'we' just signed Bale etc...).

It's human nature to want to be part of a community or collectiveness.

Think the 99.9% is way off the mark. Plenty of people doing things day to day they should be proud of. Doesn't have to be in the media spotlight, or particularly big, to count.

But Britain didn't start it, it's been going off for thousands of years. It's why they are called slaves, slavs's the Romans used to enslave people from the Slovakia area, hence where the word originates.

Also don't be fooled by the liberal elite blaming us fr slavery, the Libyans were raiding villages of the south coast of 17th century England and taking away the occupants and putting them into slavery, slavery was only black towards the end of slavery, before that they were mostly white victims. That's why rule Britannia has the line, Britons never never shall be slaves, because at that point they were.

Britain was one of the most successful countries because it was one of the first secular countries. One where church and state were separated. That was our biggest achievements, the rest just follow on from that.

Bloody hell one direction does make me think Putin has a point. Very smart man Putin, he's usually right on most things though. I believe him on Syria, Russia Today has some great coverage on a number of issues that our media won't show and their interviewers are much higher quality than the garbage from sky and the bbc

I know what you mean.

I guess what I'm saying is, you should do as much as you can in life to draw pride from your own achievements, rather than your biggest sense of pride coming from things you had no hand in, because it's pretty superficial.

But then we live in a very superficial world.

+ if we all had a stronger sense of personal pride then things like the London riots wouldn't happen.

He does not have the intelligence of an idiot.
