Fancy driving round the west coast of the states next year, staying in motels on route and swanky hotels in LA, Vegas and San Fran.

If you have any tips, suggestions or things to see/do or avoid then I am all ears. Trying to collate as much info as possible.

Cheers Acorners!

I had a couple of weeks out there about 6 years ago, but I didn't do much other than the obvious bits and bobs!

Las Vegas - I was pretty young, so didn't do much except gamble and get wasted, but I wish I'd caught a show while I was out there, Penn and Teller have regular slots at one of the casinos, would love to go see one of their shows. Grand Canyon is a must, I did a coach trip (poor student traveller), but I'm sure a helicopter trips would be awesome too.

San Francisco - Again, don't recall doing a lot here, Alcatraz is an absolute must, I wish I'd gone up to one of the national parks near there (Yosemite?). I also caught an Oakland Raiders game!

Los Angeles - I went to the getty center, universal studios, muscle beach, malibu, hollywood.

well you could tie it in with Domainfest in feb @ santa monica

then i would head up to Hollywood stayed 2 times at the Mondrian hotel

is great the sky bar is well to die for at weekend and you best stay at the hotel

to make sure you will get in its Hollywood trendy check out the website

but good fun to and you wood have to go to mels dinner there too

also spent my last money in 2003 on the gumball3000 which was great too

Manhattan to Hollywood in 4 days only 15 speeding tickets if the finishing party at domainfest is the

playboy mansion then that's kinda worth it too

have a great time

Only done the Las Vegas bit and was enjoyable, do some research on other things to do there as walking up/down the strip can be a bit repetitive looking at the hotels etc

Grand Canyon did by helicopter which was great, think we had a 'rancher breakfast' in the price also, personally would of liked to stop at a few more places for photos by aint possible with strict controls on landing in the park etc, so next time (prob in summer when the weather is great and the ladies are round the pools  ) will get on a coach trip, very long days but far more of the photo opportunities which i like

keep us posted on your plans as i'd like a trip like this, something different get to see more etc

Did a road trip down the west coast a few years ago and another down the west cost/across the county just over a year ago.

Like others said Alcatraz is a must when you're in san fran.

Route 1 along the coast/big sur is a stunning drive, if you have time to go that way rather than the 101 then do it!

San Diego is a lovely place to visit. Would definitely be on my list if I was to do the West Coast tour again. It's not to far from Vegas either if you fancy a drive past Death Valley.

Nice area :) Well, here we go:

ONLY drive to Vegas at night 9be careful though, the highway is absolutely straight and it's difficult not to speed). When you get over the hill top, you will understand why ;)

Orange County: places like Seal Beach, Sunset Beach, etc. Try them, things to see - Queen Mary, Spruce Goose, etc.

SF - Nightmarish drive but Golden Gate and some "bendy" streets are fun. Try the Sequoia park (Redwood).

LA - I'll give this one a miss, LA traffic is horrendous.
