This has been something I have been meaning to post about for a while now, I have noticed increasing amounts of TV advertisements using "Search For" instead of display a domain name.

Example: Subway uses search for "Eat Fresh".

1. What does this mean for domain names in the long run.
2. The amount of traffic they must be losing from searchers clicking PPC adverts or the organic listings above or below.

Thanks, Darren.

My hands up for regging a domain on the key phrase advertised on TV as they haven't done themselves.

Crazy the marketing company hasn't the gray matter to think of it but hey ho.

Yes they will loose a lot of traffic IMO and it will change I think back to domains.

If I ran a TV campaign I would always use a good domain name in the ad. This "search for" trend has been going on for a while but personally I think it's bad practice. If anything it gives opportunities for domainers, as they can attempt to reg terms related to the "search for" and then contact the company to point out the error of their ways.

Rgds

Agree - often wonder why they dont have a first class domain tied into a particular advertising campaign. I guess if they can't get their hands on a suitable domain, then it's the next best things.

a smarter agency would use "search for: domain.tld" instead of a keyword... that way if your site is anyway decent you will have the first 5 or so listings organically to urself...

I had Samsung Led within an extended URL and was top of G for a couple of weeks whilst they were running adverts saying search for 'Samsung LED', the hits went through the roof it was ace :D

I can see a good opportunity for a smart affiliate to have a bash with a few quick fix SEO techniques to jump to the top of the rankings :)

Yes Samsung was the other example that i was going to use.

With lucrative keywords and products it could be worth domainers, SEO companies and the like going on a campaign to rank for these terms getting the advertising work on TV done for them.

Regarding the Subway "Eat Fresh" search term the first page of Google shows two different companies using PPC and seven other organic listings, to me it makes no sense in giving rivals the exposure off the back of your advertising campaign.

Probably means nothing for domains, as only a fraction of 1% of companies can afford to do TV advertising, and only some % of those will ever use "search for".

Would you really use a generic in this type of advertising? If you did then the customer would see 10 listings all entirely relevant, 9 of which would be direct competitors to the advertiser - at least in any market that is even slightly competitive.

It is far easier to get them to enter some seeming random phrase that they can not only rank number 1 for easily, but also have very low ppc cost for. There's a great article somewhere about Comparethemarket lowering it's brand search ppc costs by a factor of 100 after launching the comparethemeerkat campaign, or something amazing.
