I have a client that had a .org purchased on their behalf and since then the registrant has disappeared. We are building a site and badly need to get this .org domain that won't expire until jan 2007.

The whois details have the company name for whom i am building this site...is there anyway to get this domain back? I know nothing about .org's!!

Cheers.

Unfortunately the domain is set to transfer prohibited and the all emails are set to the registrant, not the company i'm dealing with. Although the registrant name, address are set to the company. So i recon any attempt to transfer won't work.

I'll contact pir.org...

If you're not the legal registrant i'm afraid you've got a waiting game ahead of you, you cannot transfer the name if you do not have access to the registrar...Best thing to do would be a place a backorder at Snapnames/Pool/Club Drop etc etc etc and hope for the best....if the domain isn't that vauable in domaining circles you may get lucky an come away only $60 worse off..if not, get that credit card at the ready ;)

What if the registrant has gone out of business? The whois does have the rightful owner's company details as the registrant, just not the admin/or email contacts. I have sent an email to pir to request that they send further details to the registrant's postal address on how to get the name back under our control. Long shot, otherwise as you say, it's use another domain until january!

I'm guessing there would be a period of redemption etc after the official expiration in january?

Yes, usual redemption period applies, it'll be a tough one to gain control of it manually, never know though, a few phone calls usually do the trick better than email/letters. :)
