Hi all, great to be here, i got itroduced to this through my australian group

dntrade dot com au

my background is being a commercial advertising photographer and switched to websites in 2000.

for the first 6 years i bascially registered domains, built them, ranked them and sold advertising on them, and i am still doing this but the business has grown to sidelines where i do it for others as i have the systems in place.

At this moment i am only .com.au , i have a few .coms which i am developing myself and would like to expand into the uk market.

I spent 2 years in london 1990/1 running pubs for Watney Truman Ltd and LOVEDDD it, as all my background relates to sales and marketing

the albert in st james was my first pub, the audley in mayfair then prospect of whitby in wapping wall wapping, so i had a GREAT start to my london experience.

i have no expectations from this forum except i'm glad it works the same as "dnt" , I think i have a lot to offer after 12 years of making money online and thus i joined because i wanted to get a feel for other countries perspectives on what the internet world is up to.

honestly i think at first i will be a viewer more then a poster but in dnt AU i am a poster big time so i'm just going to feel the ground with you so i don't say something stupid LOL

happy to be here, love england, i have been all around england ( sorry didn't get to newquay) , went to wales, scotland ( not north on inverness ), ireland and a littleeeee bit of northern ireland

favourite palce is london but the lake district is pretty special, but i loved everything ! ohhh Bath.... hmmm, now that was a wild weekend LOL

i hope i can share some things with you, be careful as i will only tell you my honest thoughts

oh domains LOL, i own @ 250, i am buy/build/sell not buy/sell , i manage @ 100+ for individual clients and i manage another 150+ for 1 client

thanks

Nice Intro welcome Tim - i understand your focus on the .com.au extension. The Aussies seem to use little else for home grown sites

its pretty much an expectation by australians that a busines OWNS thier .com.au , thus why we do this, the only businesses that use .com are ones targeting overseas visitors so you find that on places like sydney, gold coast, cairns. But i still advise them to secure the .com.au

eg: if you are a "sydney dentist" then their is an expectation that that will convert to your domain name ( obviously you won't have it as some one else has ) but in country towns and lets talk england, if you are a dentist in chelsea then having chelseadentist.co.uk or dentistchelsea.co.uk is quite valueable

you also have to remember that we only have 22million people here ! so the metrics are different but the systems are the same especially now with google geo targeting.

if you were an australian LOCAL business and have a dot com then it is a bad decision.

the benefit is that we have TRAINED consumers to type .com.au without even having to train them !

its 1.20AM now here, time for bed

Hi and welcome to the forum Tim.

You sound like a very experienced domain guy and an asset to the forum. Being a newbie myself, I look forward to hopefully learning from you.

It's pretty understandable, given the geographics and the limited (overseas) associations of the Australian market therefore its focus on .com.au. (i do understand all the southern Asian connections) But difficult to compare to the UK market in terms of influence

How does the domain drop (non renewal) system work in Australia ??

Welcome to the forum :)

PS: funny to see that you made more than one post, yet you are still a zero post member :D
First time I notice that.

should i be answering this in this thread? if not please move it.

we have a very active drop market and a VERY strong community at dntrade dot com au , if you want o know everythign then that is the place to visit, there are others but i like the way DNT works.

We ahve just had face to face meetups in Melbourne, Brisbane and just last week Sydney which have been VERY successful to get to know the people you "just" chat to and put a name to a face.

drops: well the 2 big hitters are
HTML:
netfleet.com.au and drop.com.au

both companies and the people within them are great.

i dare say everything runs pretty smootly in OZ.

check them out so i don't waste time explaining, the AUDA is in control of everything and members of DNT are on the board so we do have a say in what goes on.

back in 2001 you almost had to give australian blood to get a domain but its not so now, still it seems we need to have some validation as an australian to register a domain which i think is a good thing ( i own no .co.uk )

to contradict myself i think it needs to open up as from a "domaining" point of view increased competition will increase flip prices.

the reason i say that is i am "buy/build/sell" so if more people do that then we get an improved website industry as people want to build the best website business platform/model.

-----------

a lot of us dabble in .co.nz , but it is also a small market. For me the the .co.nz's i own directly suit what i am doing in OZ and it was just logical to add them to my portfolio, eg: new zealand as a whole is the population of sydney so you have to pick a domain that can cover the entire country.

-----------

Many just stick to .com and play the big games, some of the members are VERY big players ( i'm speaking like i own the joint but i do not, i'm just a happy member of DNT )

tim

PS: you will notice i do not spell check, typo or gramma anything i post, BUT if i am building your website strategy then I DO .

Cheers for the info Tim. - I will take a look and I appreciate your comprehensive response. My daughter was snagged by an Aussie (he's a great bloke) and now settled in Melbourne, so i may be asking them to register one or two.

Welcome Tim. One of the best introductory posts I've seen on here.

Hi Tim welcome, I lived in Adelaide on and off for a few years and i continue to visit a couple of times a year. Used to browse DNTrade and Netfleet, had small dealings with .com.au when i had a business there. Good to have you aboard.

thanks chris, i haven't been to adelaide or perth yet although there are very few roads i haven't travelled on the east coast.

i plan to go to adelaide and perth soon on business, perth is BOOMINGGGGGG, and just yesterday i bought some perth and adelaide doms so it looks like i am going west ! , its just finding the time, we have a 4 and 5.7yr old, so i generally go for short periods of time but perth really needs a week or 2 from melbourne to make it worth while.

I'm interested in getting some .co.uk doms, simply to justify a trip to london, lol it doesn't really matter as i can justify it anyway but i'm looking to expand some of my successful online businesses into the uk.

i'm not sure what the laws are in uk and thus why i am here learning but i have rels in uk so maybe that will help.

Welcome to Acorn Tim. Great first post & interesting views of of OZ folk being trained or pre-conditioned to type the .au without thinking about it.
It would be interesting to learn your views and perspective on the UK market once your settled in with some .co.uk 's & live UK sites.
There are plenty of names to be snapped up over here (if your patient) at the moment in my opinion. Good luck!

thanks fresh79, i think it will be 12 months before i buy a .co.uk as my .com.au business is simply BOOMING and thats not boasting just facts, the au market is humming and some aussies will say "don't tell anyone" but i say it can only help the market grow.

i first need to understand the different dynamics of uk to aus, you see we use business terms here that you don't use over there eg: i think? we use "real estate agents" and you use " real estate broker" ??? i could be wrong but i am just giving an example as i might purchase a great domain for australia which is a DUD domain for uk, so same goes for you guys when in .com.au

with the expendential growth in mobile internet usage it basically means that EVERY website that is over 2 years old needs to be REDONE !

2012++ is the Y2K of websites, we are in for exciting times right now, domain buy/sell is one thing but the real money is buy/build/sell and/or "rebuild"

ohh by the way Fresh79 i have been to Sheffield, 2 days before xmas 1990, a mate and i decided we would have xmas in scotland ( aussie + kiwi ) and set out on the drive north, well clapham common to outside the M25 took 4hours !!!!!!, and then another 4 hours to sheffield, ( we chose the M1 route) we thought we'd be drinking beers in edinburgh by sunset !!! in aus 700klm is just 7 hours !!!!

anyway we found an nice B&B and then got to scotland the next day.

Can't say I knew a lot about .com.au until today - thanks :D
