Just stumbled upon a network of sites that use a keyword with the ltd.uk extension, for example:

Insurance.ltd.uk
CarDealers.ltd.uk

What are your thoughts?

Quite a few people do it.

You do need to actually register a ltd company also.

But some have a holding company with dozens of ltd companies in it, each one having its own snappy ltd.uk domain.

Well worth it for the minimal fee you pay to have a ltd company.

We were going to do it a while back, but did not bother, you bringing this up again wished we had lol

Some great names still available in ltd.uk

Hmm not sure why "IN@ SURANCE @ LTD" are entitled to the first domain when there is a company called "INSURANCE LTD" for sale.

Looks like the use of "@" symbols may be a loophole in Nominet issuing exact match .ltd.uk domains cheaply for competitive terms.

As long as its available and you meet the terms set out you can register it. Plus the online services offer you daft alternatives with @ signs in them sometimes, hence why lots use it.

Some good ones still available

London Ltd recently disolved, most geos are avilable

Hmm, insurance.co.uk would be worth a hell of a lot £xxx, xxx

If insurance.ltd.uk received the same ranking for extension (which it seems to) then this is very interesting.

However I think it is wrong for nominet to allow this as ltd addresses are for ltd companies to have a presence on the internet - not for thin affiliate minisites.

Interesting non-the-less

Rather ironic if we insert .org.uk / Non-profit Organisations

However LTD.uk registration are restricted to ltd companies, whereas .org.uk aren't limited to Non-profits - Its debatable :)

Just a bit of Saturday morning humour - check out the appraisal section I'm on a roll

We registered a few companies purely to try this, waste of time. The domains didn't get the exact match benefit that .co.uk/org.uk enjoys. Combine that with the domain itself being completely unmemorable (who's heard of a .ltd.uk?) I don't think its worth doing at all.

It's probably worth doing if the chicken-and-egg is the right way round. In other words, if you're looking to incorporate a Ltd company anyway and something really memorable and appropriate is still available as a company name, then you might as well get the matching ltd.uk domain name afterwards to go with it. Especially if the .co.uk isn't!

You sure it doesn't even get some of that benefit?

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=car+dealers

3rd result for 12,100 local exacts... not bad going.

same people own:

Search Engine Ltd

.ltd.uk seems to be weighted fairly well? I am not doubting your research, but google may have changed weighting since.

@Edwin: Good points, but im more curious about this 'network' of limited companies with ltd domains. You are quite right though - if I was to register a new ltd company I would probably do similar.

It might have changed, this was well over a year ago. I've not seen anything that makes me think its changed though, and your two examples aren't convincing me either :)

"seo Newcastle" is an extremely easy phrase to rank for, its not competitive at all. They have 87k links and pr5, I'd expect them to rank there regardless of their domain.

"car dealers" are also pr5 with loads of links, there is nothing out of the ordinary there. I'd be more convinced if you could show me one ranking with not many links, in a relatively competitive field - as there is loads of .co.uk and .org.uk ranking like that which shows the exact match benefit in action.

Ah good point, I didn't get those results when I ran it through - probably forgot www. :D

Will check some more and see what I come up with!

I may be wrong here but I'm sure Nominet clamped down on this over a year ago after there was a huge influx of ltd.uk registrations with @ symbols as part of the company name.

Maybe someone here can confirm this?

I wonder who would win in a DRS?
searchengine.ltd uk
1. SEARCH ENGINE @ LTD
2. SEARCH ENGINE LIMITED
Number 1 only got it as Nominet do not allow @ within the domain.
Number 2 was incorporated way back in 1993 but is dormant. If they decided to start trading, who should have the name?

The thing I've noticed with all of them that I have come across over the last few months is they show as "dormant company" at companies house but all have a site or googleads page.

.

Someone must have been having a larf or trying to get the .ltd.uk domain?

Didn't last very long though. Presumably rumbled by Companies House.
