My sincere grats to dropcatcher who has just caught me a great domain formerly owned by stealthnet ( they must be kicking themselves)

downloadringtones.co.uk

Thamks guys and keep up the good work !

you know thats something that has really frustrated me. Catching domains!

I have sat on nominet.org.uk clicking refresh when the database updates itself every 5 minutes waiting for domains to become availble. And if/when it becomes available I would then jump to 123-reg.co.uk (my host) and regsiter it. It has never worked because when it updates someones name is normally there having registered it and its out of suspension! I have wasted a few hours I can tell you!

The last one was clone.co.uk which was one I was particularly keen on! I sat at my computer screen all day one Friday until midnight! I woke up on the Saturday and it was still suspended I kept clicking refresh until 1.45pm and it was still suspended. Then I checked at 2pm and it was gone and some person who didnt want to disclose their address on the WHOIS Database had registered it! I nearly cried!! I thought Nominet would close at the weekends! But having spoke to someone on the phone at Nominet he says they are released when certain files update theirselves on the system and it does it automatically. (I wasnt sure if he was just bull***ing me or not).
Clone.co.uk is now up for sale at Sedo for £20,000 !!!!

I heard that there is domain catching software that you can get. Is this true? IF so how much do they cost and are they successful?

The whois is usually out of date by up to 5 mins and most 'catchers' have systems that can spot a domain is available using the whois within seconds of it showing as unregistered.

The new system called 'dac' gives real time availability info so unless you're using a 3rd party catch service the chances of Joe public being able to catch a decent domain via a normal whois lookup and registration service are fairly slim.

(Having said that there are lots of names that are expiring that don't appear on the catchers lists but you have to work hard to find them  )

Godfrey im no expert,to be honest i havnt a clue,i just use third party catchers like dropcatcher and snapnames etc, theyt do all the donkey work, mind you the likes of tagnames and a few people on here get the ral cream unless like nestserve said you go hunting yourself and hope you have spotted one that none else spots and use dropcatcher like i just have with "downloadringtones"

Good Luck !

Tag and membership just north of £500 then you need a system to use it, they can vary from homebrew code in about 15mins to whizz bang applications for £5000+

If you are prepared to place time into catching it can be rewarding to invest some cash and set things up properly.
