Hi Everyone,

Just wondered what people thought about Sport2020.com.

I prefer it to Sports2020.

Huge keyword and, as you are probably aware, the Olympics are in 2020 - so could make for a nice investment.

Any thoughts on value ?

Cheers,

Steve.

Beware anything to do with the Olympics, not sure if you are aware, but there are multiple trademarks on the games, for example, for the London games, no domain name is allowed to have the digits "2012" in it, nor can you use the word "Olympic" or "Oympics" in a domain name, plus a large list of related words is also trademarked, I don't think it will be any different for "2020", they will no doubt trademark that if it's not already.

Take a look at the links in Admins post here:

http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/forum-news-feedback/1591-forum-olympic-domain-sales-policy.html

Also on Nominet here regarding the 2012 games:

http://www.nominet.org.uk/disputes/legalinfo/olympics/

Then again, there are already a lot of sites with "2020" in their names if you Google "2020", so if you can get a site up before they request a trademark for it, you might be alright?

See this on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Summer_Olympics#Trademark_controversy

Trademark controversy

Anticipating bids for the Summer Olympics by Paris, France, in 2005 a Parisian, Mr Gilbert L., registered the trademarks of "Paris 2016", "Paris 2020", "Paris 2024" and "Paris 2028" and associated internet domain names. On March 14, 2007 the High Court of First Instance of Paris (Tribunal d'instance of Paris) ruled that the registration of the domain names was fraudulent and annulled the trademarks

Thanks for the info Systreg.

Very interesting stuff.

I've just had a look and Sport2012 (somewhat more blatant) is a forum site.

I'd be surprised if it infringed trademarks, as it's only an indirect reference to the Olympics and not a term appearing on the banned list, but I do see the issue. Also, it wouldn't be a nominet issue being a .com.

Oh well, it's a new BMW (or an old micra !), or a new suit for court !

Cheers,

Steve.

As Systreg said be very, very careful, i know your name doesn't say Olympics but if you mention the Olympics on a site like that they may very well come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Good luck Steve

NB* sorry i never seem to have much good to say about your names, just being honest.

No Worries Doodlebug.

It's all good. I appreciate the input.

We live and learn.

Might build a site about darts then !! You watch, by then they'll make it an Olympic sport with a big old beer tent, nasty pies and a naff prize draw !

I picked up CubanAccommodation.com too - that's a bit better I think, but that's for a different thread.

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi Steve

Maybe 2020 could refer to 20-20 vision? If you knocked up a quick site with that as the theme/logo you might protect yourself. "The 20-20 view of the sporting world" ...something like that?

Cheers, Jon

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. There's no reference to a TM in the domain name and is it a world crime to discuss the Olympics as part of a forum discussion? Nahhh....

I tend to agree, Azooza.

All references to sport MUST be kept under lock and key every 4 years, or you're nicked !.....hmmmm....

I've no doubt there will be many initiatives sprouting up around 2015 or so with the name sport2020 - but I so wanted to enjoy my millions whilst young..I may have to wait a while

Jon, yes to be honest the 'vision' aspect of it was the reason I bought it - I'd seen Sport247.com getting lots of offers on Sedo, so I thought I'd have a punt, with other terms like Sports Bars getting sheds of offers - though for obvious reasons.

It's been suggested the name would be perfect for the IPL 20-20 cricket league by the way. With all their riches they currently use the imaginatively-named Home - iplt20.com - The Official Site of the DLF Indian Premier League Cricket. Again though, the meaning of the name may become a little confusing as the 2020 Olympics approach.

I struggle a bit with cricket too, so I think it would need a big 20-20 cricket fan to perhaps put something together and approach them with it.

Cheers Guys,

Steve.
