SMEs should choose short domain names that reflect the product they sell, a start-up advisory body has said today.

Startup Co has advised SMEs against using domain names that feature the name of their company, unless it is a reflection of the product they are selling.

What? "advised SMEs against using domain names that feature the name of their company"

how bizarre. Someone should tell thecompanywhomakeExcel.com or thesearchenginebeginningwithG.com

Better still, own both!

I've been buying domains for the company my wife works at for about 8 years.

They own variations of their company name + 10 domains closely related to their 'products'.

Search engines prefer their product related domain names more when searching for specific products, even though content is similar to their official site.

Just an observation.

oh indeed - mini sites for every product AND a corporate site, but to advise "SMEs against using domain names that feature the name of their company" is just ludicrous.
