I have now launched my site, which is effectively a mini site with a little more content (www.motherandinfant.co.uk - it is still very basic I know). I've spent the last week or so trying to build some links to relevant sites, submitting articles on ezine, building up unique quality content, keywords and metatags, installed google analytics, signed up to affiliate and pinged and submitted a sitemap.

Question 1, how much longer should it take for google to index the site (or is that a 'how long is a piece of string' type question)?

Question 2, as I have added more content since submitting a sitemap, do I need to ping and submit another, and if so would that interupt the indexing process??

Thanks in advance

The site is indexed in Google. Type:
site:motherandinfant.co.uk

If you have added more pages, then Google may find and index them naturally (if the site is being crawled frequently) or you can help this indexing process by updating and resubmitting the sitemap. See:

Amazing! Must have done it last night. Ah right I see, and I'm guessing google crawls popular sites more frequently than not so popular ones..?

Thanks for your replies Pete you give good answers lol

Wouldnt worry about a sitemap to much, if your site is well built google will find the pages nice and easy over time.

Yeah I would have to agree with mat here. Haven't noticed much of a difference in rankings with or without a sitemap. As long as your navigation is clean and clear.

It's true that the most popular sites get crawled and indexed more frequently by Google.

Matt Cutts (public face of Google and head of Web Spam) confimed this and also claimed that in one of the latest updates to Google's algorithm, that as soon as sites are crawled, they are immediately indexed.

If you have a new site, keep adding good quality, unique content for users, and one day you may just become a popular, authority site. ;)

Thanks very much for your replies guys. Everywhere I look it seems content is king. Searching for 'mother and infant' this morning I come up 8th on page 1, which I'm quite pleased with considering I didn't know how to make a site or even what SEO stood for 3 weeks ago. Now to hit number 1!

Cheers for the heads up, i've just mailed the host to find out why and how long until normal service. It would of been nice for them to inform me really, but free hosting i guess beggars can't be choosers! Once I see that the site can pay for it's own hosting I'll be inclined to pay for some quality hosting
